We can all strive to improve in an area in our lives. It may be that we need to focus more on studying the gospel. It may be that we worry too much, and so we need to focus on trusting the Lord more. It may be that we need to learn to be more kind to others and to ourselves. It is easy to allow ourselves to become wrapped up in the overwhelming need to be better, instead of just working on what we need to change. Here are some tips to help you move forward without feeling overwhelmed.
1) Do not too much at once. You will set yourself up for a failure if you try to change too much at once. Generally focusing on one or two habits is all that you should do. This allows you to really change this area of your life, in a positive way.
2) Make it a matter of prayer and study. If you are struggling with patience, read about patience, understand what it is and how it can benefit you. Pray that you will be patient and learn ways to help you to be calm in stressful situations. You can do the same with nearly every trait you want to develop.
3) Look at the ways that you are improving, instead of dwelling on the ways that you are failing. It is important to assess yourself from time to time to see the areas that you need to work on, but if you dwell on every failure you will end up doing more harm than good.
4) Find a way to make this a new habit for yourself. If you are trying to study the gospel more intently or more often, find a way to make this happen automatically for yourself. You may study the scriptures the very first thing in the morning or you may find that your lunch break is the time that it is most productive. If you work the habit into your daily routine you are much more likely to succeed.
5) Once you have accomplished it, then you need to move on to the next area. It is important that we keep moving forward. This will help us to grow closer to our Heavenly Father.
