This is actually pretty neat – and I was debating putting this in the baby blog, but it actually fits really well here in the fitness blog. Do you remember a few months ago that I talked about Stroller Moms? When my daughter and I went to the skating birthday party yesterday, it was the first time that I’d been in a skating rink in more than 20 years (and now don’t I feel exceptionally old?)
Anyway, when we were at the skating rink, I saw a sign for stroller skating hours and I headed over to talk to the man behind the counter to ask some questions and here is what I found out.
Stroller Skating Moms
The rink is opened six days a week and six days a week, they offer two one hour periods during the day when the rink is open to stroller skating moms only. The stroller skating moms can bring younger children with them, but it’s primarily for these moms with their strollers to go in strap on a pair of skates and skate with their babies around the rink. The babies, of course, are in strollers.
The music is changed to a more comfortable level and they alternate between modern music that would appeal to the moms and what I like to call kid friendly music. With the volume lowered, the decibels aren’t going to hurt the babies ears. The babies get to enjoy the stroller motion as moms take them out for a spin and moms get to enjoy all the aerobic benefits of a skating workout.
The rink charges about $4 for two hours of skating, but for stroller moms, the cost is a little under $2 for that hour and there is no additional cost for extra kids. So if you are a mom with a baby in a stroller and three older children, all of you can skate for just $2 and the rink is far less crowded than at public skating times. The great thing about skating – is you burn an equivalent number of calories just like when you are jogging – without the stress on your knees and you will build strength in your legs, reduce body fat and get a great overall workout.
You also don’t have to buy any skates, since most rinks rent them for less than $3 a day – however, if there are five of you skating regularly, you might consider buying skates because a pair of roller skates are less than $30 and for kids they run around $20 to $25 – that can save you a lot of money in the long run.
