Study the Scriptures by Topic

My scripture study has taken on a much more meaningful light in the past few weeks. I have studied the scriptures by topic before, but usually just to prepare for a talk or lesson. Just recently I have been wanting to bring my scripture study to a new level, and so I decided to study about a specific question or issue that I was worried about each day. It is amazing to me how the scriptures do contain answers to every aspect of our lives.

The topical guide is a great resource to help you to find answer to questions or topics that you may be looking for. As you look up your topic, look up scriptures under the related headings as well. These are the topics listed after the topic you are looking up. These topics can also add insight and help to answer questions that you may be having.

As you select the verses to study, be sure to read the surrounding verses and chapter to fully understand the context and meaning of the words. Several times I have found an answer or a further point to ponder in the verses just preceding or following the one listed in the topical guide. Take notes as you study. You can write down how each verse applies to your question. At the end of the scripture study session take a few minutes to determine how you should apply what you have learned to your daily life. Then pray about it.

You can also use the General Conference talks, and other lesson manuals that are found online. These talks often offer further insights and suggestions on how to deal with your problem or to find peace with the solution. You can easily complete a keyword search and begin to find answers to your questions. The new True to the Faith manual is a great resource to find information as well.

As you strive to make sincere scripture study a daily occurrence, you will be blessed with greater understanding and peace. You will be given the strength and guidance that you need. Although understanding the scriptures may be difficult at first, the more you read the more your understanding will increase.
