Succeeding in Stock Photography

Once you decide that stock photography is the way you’d like to make money with your favorite photos, then the next step is to conduct research on the stock agencies you want to work for.

Stock agencies are considered the liaison between photo buyers and sellers. As a middle man, the stock agency hosts photos, provides search capabilities, completes billing and pays the photographer commission on a regular basis. In addition, the agency keeps a percentage of the transaction for services rendered.

When examining your stock agency options consider that most fall into one of two categories: Macrostock and microstock agencies. The former tends to deal exclusively with professional photographers. Meaning they are incredibly selective about the types of photos they accept and even more particular about the type of photographers they are willing to work with. The upside to landing a gig with a macrostock agency is that you are almost assured a big payout.

If you are a hobby photographer looking to break into the pro world, then you might consider getting your start with microstock photo agencies. While they pay significantly less than their macro counterparts, they are also much less restrictive about their photo selection process. Microstock photo agencies sell images at reasonable prices to places, such as non-profit agencies and bloggers who cannot afford macrostock prices.

Before you select a stock agency, consider employing the following photo techniques to ensure your images are up to snuff:

Think before you shoot: It’s important to research the material posted on stock photography websites to see exactly what they are looking for.

Composition: Learn the basics of good composition. Take notes on how the world’s best photographers capture unique angles and manipulate lighting to their advantage.

Quality over quantity: Don’t be afraid to shoot hundreds of images in an effort to capture a winning shot. Get in as much practice as you can in order to build a stellar portfolio that will impress clients.
