Summer Activities to Beat the Heat and Burn Calories

Summer is here and that means the weather should be luring children outside to play and burn off energy and any winter weight gain. After months of sitting in a classroom and coming home to sit to do homework and watch TV or play video games it is time to get out in the sun. With heat advisories across the country and temperatures in the nineties many are seeking shelter rather than the sun. Sitting bored in the house becomes the summer activity of the day. You should listen to the heat advisories and take caution being active in high heat. Plan being active during the early part of the morning or later evening to avoid the sun but be mindful at all times if your area is heating up.

Here are some ways to beat the heat and get some active play outdoors: (Again, take heed of any heat advisories these suggestion are for your regular hot days but not for days you need to take caution.)

Water Gun War: Grab a gun and run around trying not to get squirted. Although we know you secretly want to get squirted for the relief of hot weather.

Swimming: Swimming burns calories while you stay cool. This low impact exercise is a great way for every member of your family to stay active.

Slip and Slide: These are fun for the kids and it keeps them running, playing and laughing while staying cool being soaked with water.

Sprinkler: Sprinklers are fun to jump over, run around, and just stand right in the middle and feel the cool water. Keeping one going will keep your grass growing and your children active outside.

Indoor Waterpark: Take a day and get the best of both worlds; the indoors and the water. An indoor waterpark is a great way to play and keep active.

Night time walks: If the sun is relentless then head out in evening or nighttime. Grab some glow sticks and make a fun night of it.
