Summer Camps for Kids Who Have Special Needs – 2012

marshmallows Children who attend a summer camp get the opportunity to have some unique experiences that cannot be found outside of camp. There are plenty of summer camps that are designed to accommodate children who have special needs. Will your child be going to camp this summer?

It is normal for parents to be a bit nervous about the idea of their child attending a summer camp. This is especially true for parents of kids who have special needs. In addition to all the typical worries about the weather and the food, there are genuine concerns about whether or not the staff at the camp are properly trained to handle your child’s special needs.

There are several summer camps that are specifically designed for kids who have special needs. Some camps are for children with one, particular, special need, while others are a bit more generalized. Your child can have the experience of attending a summer camp with a bunch of other kids who all have the same type of special need.

My Summer Camps is a website that has a long list of summer camps that are for kids who have special needs. The list has been broken into a series of sub-categories. This makes it easy for parents to search through the camps that are specific to their child’s needs, health issues, or disabilities. This is a good place to start!

There is another list of special needs summer camps that is provided by the Farifax County Public Schools. They are the largest public school system in the Baltimore-Washington and Northern Virginia Metropolitan area. Parents who live in that area might want to start their search for a summer camp with this list.

KC Kids Fun has a list of special needs summer camps that are located in the Kansas City area. Each camp has a brief description about what types of special needs it has been designed to accommodate. An individual link to each camp has been provided.

It is a good idea for parents to contact the camp that they are interested in. Doing so gives you the chance to ask all of your questions about the camp, and to get an answer from someone who is a staff member of it. Parents should also talk to their child about summer camp. Does he or she want to go to one? If so, then start preparing your child, right away, for what it will be like to go to summer camp.
