Summer Courses or Summer Vacation?

Many public and private school systems are now out for summer vacation. Most colleges have been out for several days.

So the question now for many recently graduated high school and current college students is whether to begin/continue to take classes or to take summer vacation. When I was in college I took a few summer semester hours and also worked.

Some recently graduated high school students are ready to jump in and begin getting through with basic courses. If you are a self-starter and enjoy school, this may be an option for you. However, if you are dreading the college course work and looking forward to your vacation, do not burn yourself out in the beginning.

As for current college students, I think the answer depends mainly on the situation of the student. If you are living in an apartment near campus, the answer may be to take classes or stay and get a job. In most cases rent does not stop during the summer. So why continue to pay rent and move back home too? The answer may be to continue to live away from home and pick up a few summer hours.

Look for a harder, more time-consuming course in your major. You may find that taking this course alone during the summer is easier than adding it to your load in the spring or fall semesters. You will have more time to devote to the class.

However if you are in no hurry to complete your college career, you may feel that you need a break from classes. Taking a couple of months off from courses in the summer may prepare you mentally for the upcoming semester.

Always check with your advisor and see which path is the best for your major. Some courses are not offered every semester.
