Summer Is Fun and Accidents

It is now officially the summer season. Many of us are spending more time outdoors. With all of the fun and activities that we can participate in during summer, we also have to keep in mind that this is the time of year when most accidents happen.

One of the dangers that can happen in the sweltering temperatures is becoming dehydrated. It is very important that while outdoors you keep your body properly hydrated.

Last week our family took a vacation to Washington D.C. where we spent a great deal of time walking long distances outside in the blazing sunshine. My 16-year-old son ended up feeling sick that night, from what we believe was a lack of water. He just wasn’t drinking enough and ended up with a slight fever and headache.

Thankfully after properly hydrating him and a good night’s rest he was better the next morning. However it did open my eyes to the importance of making sure you drink enough even when you think you are fine, like my son did.

This is especially important if you are doing any type of physical activity outdoors. You want to frequently take sips of water or an electrolyte drink.

You may need to also avoid the sun by spending some time in the shade, going indoors for breaks or wearing a visor or cap that protects your head from the sun’s rays.

If you are going to exercise outdoors, also be sure to warm up and stretch. You can hurt yourself by failing to do so. Warming up can prevent injuries.

Did you know that the two most common types of accidents take place in pools and on trampolines? You can avoid accidents by wearing a life jacket and making sure that children are never left unattended. Trampolines should be enclosed with netting and be closely supervised by adults. Never allow more than two children to jump on a trampoline.

Other common accidents occur due to a failure to wear a helmet. If you are biking, rollerblading, skateboarding, motorcycling or driving an ATV you need protection on your head.

Yes summer is fun but it is also a time for accidents. So use precaution and take steps in order to have a safe, enjoyable summer.
