Summer Maternity Trends 2009

The summer heat has officially set in. Hot blacktop, melting popsicles, the smell of sunscreen, flip flops and fireflies… they are all indications that summer is in full swing. Short shorts and spaghetti straps are sure to help keep any woman cool, but what’s a pregnant woman to wear?

Aside from the sweltering heat, summer is the perfect time to be pregnant. I was a winter mama, and I don’t care what anybody says, sweaters and pants are not the most comfortable attire when you are expecting. I watched the weather closely for the days when I could shed the pants that were digging into my waistline and throw on a loose, yet flattering summer dress. The last month afforded me a few warmer days, but by the time it warmed up, I already had a baby in my arms.

Major trends this summer: fitted tees, empire waist summer dresses, loose fitting peasant tops, floral prints that accentuate your curves, and printed tees with attitude that draw attention to your bump. Skirts and dresses are knee length or full length. Tops are longer and gathered in all the right places. Seams are placed above and below the bump; there’s no hiding that belly! Flowing tops drape across the body without looking like a tent if they are accented with a tie back. This is definitely one time in your life you want to stand out. Go for bright colors and patterns, but remember to limit the loud pattern to one item so you don’t go overboard. As for accessories: bags and sunglasses should be big, necklaces should be long, and shoes should be flat (we don’t want you falling on your behind, right?)

If you are early in your pregnancy, current trends will allow you to shop in areas other than the maternity rack. Empire waists are still definitely in and you will find them on everything from tank tops to sun dresses. Skirts with an elastic band can be worn below the bump. There’s no reason to limit yourself since you can wear it all again next summer.

Pregnant? What are you wearing this summer?
