Outdoor entertaining during the summer months is a fabulous way to take advantage of the nice weather while mingling with your favorite people. However, your party can easily go from fun to done in a heartbeat if you don’t put safety first.
Whether you are partying on your patio, deck, or in your yard, it’s important to make safety your top priority. First, consider summer’s scorching heat. The East Coast of the United States is baking under a severe heat wave right now. The sky-high temps can cause dehydration and heat exhaustion. When hosting a party outside make sure you load up on ice and water. Alcohol tends to speed up dehydration, so if you are hosting an outdoor party when the temps are sizzling, it’s a good idea to cut back on the booze and serve more thirst quenching drinks such as juice and flavored water. If you plan to serve alcohol at your party be sure to keep the phone number of a taxi service handy in case one of your guests has too much to drink.
Another way to help guests beat the heat is with large colorful umbrellas and an array of spray bottle fans. If the heat gets unbearable, use common sense. It’s no fun sweating buckets during a summer party, so when you can’t stand being outside any longer, move the party indoors and allow guests to enjoy the comfort of your air-conditioned home.
Finally, don’t let minor injuries spoil your summer fun. Nothing is less entertaining than a bug bite, sunburn, splinters or a scraped knee. Prior to hosting a party, purchase a first-aid kit and make sure it is stocked with bug repellent, sunscreen, band-aids, hydrogen peroxide and other anti-bacterial remedies. Also, think twice before breaking out your fine china for your backyard bash. You’re better off using attractive and affordable paper and plastic plates, cups and utensils. Doing so will not only avoid hours of post-party cleanup, but it will also cut down on the number of injuries due to broken glass.
