Summer Reading Programs

If your homeschoolers do nothing else this summer, they should at least read. Reading is an excellent way to continue learning without the pressure of lessons. Reading gives your kids something constructive to do on those too-hot days, as well as providing summer memories that will last a lifetime. If you were to ask me about my summers growing up, I could tell you what books I read which year, better than which Aunt I spent a week with, and what day camp I attended. Here are some summer reading programs that will make them want to read every book they can get their hands on.

Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program: Barnes & Noble will give your child a free book for every eight books they read. You will want to go to your local Barns & Noble store to participate in this program.

Scholastic Summer Reading Buzz will donate one book to Reading is Fundamental for every four books your child reads. Therefore, by reading, your child is participating in doing something for someone else. In addition, they get to participate in what looks like a very cool website where the review book they read and share their book inspired artwork.

AMC movie Theatres has given away a free movie snack pack in the last several years. Keep your eyes on this company, as they are usually pretty hush-hush about it.

Check you local library that may also have a fun summer reading program. New York State, for example has a statewide summer reading program where there will also be fun activities, events, and celebrations. California, Nebraska, and other states also have a statewide summer reading program. In addition, most libraries offer some kind of incentive for summer reading.
