Summer Storm Survival

left

This post does not provide tips on how to protect you and your children from lightning strikes, floods or other physical dangers associated with summer storms. Rather, this blog is designed specifically to help moms and dads preserve their sanity when Mother Nature unleashes torrential downpours that force kids to spend the entire day indoors.

Some simple yet entertaining indoor boredom busters include:

Sing-Off: Grab some ear plugs for yourself, and then let the kids go wild exercising their vocal cords with their own version of “American Idol,” or “The Voice.” Set-up a karaoke machine and a little stage area in your basement or family room for the singing showdown. Then, consider changing some of your traditional light bulbs to colored ones and place a judges’ table near the talent. If you have a bunch of children on hand, you could have one of them videotape the contestants, and then have the entire family watch the show later.

Movie Marathon: Use your computer to print out movie tickets on cardstock. Next, select several of your children’s favorite flicks and set-up the showing as a double or triple feature. Next, place a little table off to the side of the screening area to serve as a concession stand. Stock it with popcorn, nachos, candy and soda. Kids can gather snacks prior to choosing their seat and settling in for the afternoon.

Indoor Beach: Throw a beach party in the middle of your living room that won’t be rained out. Haul in your plastic kiddie pool from the garage and add bags of rice to it instead of water. Then, throw in some shovels, buckets, and other sand toys. Play some beach-themed music, have kids dress in their swimsuits and dance around. Finally, have each child set-up a beach towel on the floor, and then hand out some snacks for them to munch on.
