Summer Travel: Kids’ Choice

My neighbor’s 12-year-old son, Chase left for his first sleep away camp yesterday. However, instead of it being a somber moment, my neighbor came up with the brilliant idea of turning the event into a mini vacation for the rest of the family.

Chase’s camp is located in the northern part of Wisconsin, a good four hours away from our hometown. Instead of driving four hours there and four hours back in a single day, the family will be spending two nights in a rented lakeside cottage in a town not far from Chase’s camp after they drop him off.

When I complimented my neighbor on her decision to turn Chase’s camp drop-off into a fun side trip for the rest of the family she immediately revealed that it wasn’t her idea. Turns out her two younger children came up with the plan. My neighbor dubbed it a “Kids’ Choice Vacation.”

If you think about where most summer camps are located, it makes sense to take advantage of the trip. Why not spend some time in these ideal locations with members of your family who aren’t signed up for the actual camp?

The trick is finding a summer camp that’s situated in an area where the entire family wouldn’t mind vacationing. Here are some ideas:

Hockey Heaven Camp: Takes place in the beautiful Laurentian Mountains north of Montreal, Canada. The camp is family-run and has been around for nearly 70 years. In addition to being surrounded by three large lakes, the camp is home to an inline X-treme skatepark, electric guitar studio, plus a 6,000-square foot double-gym, and a giant 19,000-square foot multi-sports complex. The lakes accommodate motorized and non-motorized activities and are open to the public.

Water Sports Extravaganza Camp: The summer camp take place on California’s Big Bear Lake (where the water temperature is a comfortable 72 degrees during the summer months). Campers spend three hours each day on the water getting semi-private lessons. Expert instructors will teach your water daredevils to cut and jump the wake, ride switch-stance, end in a fakie position, perform stale fish grabs and much more. In the meantime, you can relax on the same lake in one of dozens of villas available for rent.
