Summer Travel Tidbits: Roadkill, Reckless Driving and Record High Gas Prices

ROADKILL

If you are planning to drive along Illinois highways this summer don’t expect the views to be very pleasant.

Unless you enjoy staring at miles and miles of roadkill, you will likely find the drive somewhat… well… gross.

According to the state’s transportation department, it simply doesn’t have enough money to pick up as much roadkill as it normally does this time of year because it spent too much of its budget during the winter months.

Representatives from IDOT say they spent more than twice the allotted $40 million to clear ice and snow during last winter’s severe storms and now they can’t afford to collect the dead animals that are littering area highways.

Officials with IDOT did note that workers will clear roadkill from driving lanes and any carcasses that are deemed hazardous to motorists. But the rest will be left for four-legged scavengers.

RECKLESS DRIVING

How many times have you been stopped for speeding?

I would venture to guess it pales in comparison to the amount of times a Nevada woman was caught for going over the speed limit—in a single day.

According to police in Arizona, photo enforcement cameras on a Phoenix freeway captured the female driver speeding 22 times in less than two months.

Officers say during a 45-day period starting in May, the woman was captured by police cameras speeding on 22 separate occasions along a highway near Scottsdale. Her top speed was recorded at 92 mph.

The 24-year-old woman was eventually arrested on suspicion of criminal speeding, reckless driving and endangerment.

Police say the woman was visiting her parents in Arizona when she was caught.

RECORD HIGH GAS PRICES

Good news for motorists traveling to Vermont this summer.

The state is giving away $100 gas cards each week in hopes of encouraging people to visit. The cards are redeemable at participating gas stations throughout the state.

The summer gas giveaway, dubbed “Vermont Fuels Your Vacation,” began in the summer of 2006. Back then it drew an average of 240 entries per week. But with current gas prices sitting at record highs officials say they are expecting that number to quadruple this year.

The promotion runs through the end of September. You can register by clicking here.
