Summer Travel Tidbits—In Search of Slopes, Surf and Suitcase Rebates

SKI/SURF

And here I thought the Big Island of Hawaii was the only place in the United States where you could surf and ski in the same afternoon.

Travelers to Kellogg, Idaho know better.

Last weekend visitors to the city’s newest addition—-the Silver Rapids Indoor Waterpark–had the rare opportunity to ski and surf when the end of the ski season (June 1st) overlapped with the opening of surf season (May 30th).

Okay, it’s not quite as natural as the ski and surf option Hawaii offers, but Idaho’s version was big enough to make headlines in that neck of the woods. The new 42,000-square-foot indoor waterpark, which includes a FlowRider Surf Wave surfing machine, a family raft ride with a water slide, two enclosed tube slides, a lazy river, a spray deck for toddlers, an activity pool with basketball hoops, a watery obstacle course, and a multi-level play structure with a giant tipping bucket, is a huge addition to the area.

As for the Silver Mountain Ski Resort it is now offering outdoor summer activities, including downhill mountain biking. The resort is also hosting a spectacular summer concert series with appearances by Ted Nugent on July 27th and Corbin Blue from “High School Musical” on August 2nd.

SUITCASE REBATES

Here’s a deal frugal travelers might embrace:

Loews Hotels is introducing a new program specifically designed for those travelers who have not mastered the art of packing light.

The hotel chain’s new “Baggage Buy Back” rebate promises to reimburse guests who have been socked with those new checked-baggage fees being charged by an increasing number of airlines. According to hotel execs, when guests arrive at any of Loews’ 18 U.S. and Canadian properties between June 15th and Labor Day and present an airline bag-fee receipt, they’ll get $15 per bag taken off their bill.

But before you start throwing your entire closet into your suitcase, be aware that the maximum rebate is for two bags ($30) a room.
