Summer Vacation Photo Tips

Summer is here, time to pack up the clan and head to the mountains, beach, amusement park or zoo. But before you hit the highway or take to the skies don’t forget to pack your camera bag. The thought of missing out on all of the incredible photo opportunities your travels will provide is enough to take make any snap happy parent ill.

In addition to your camera, make sure you have spare batteries, lenses, a cleaning kit, extra media cards and a mini tripod. Once you arrive at your destination be sure to remember the following tips:

Don’t let Mother Nature spoil your fun. Just because the sun isn’t shining on the day you decide to visit the zoo don’t ditch your camera. A few raindrops shouldn’t stop you from capturing precious moments of your children interacting with animals at the petting zoo. If the day is really overcast simply find a spot of color to brighten your picture.

Experiment with Panorama. If your digital camera comes with a panoramic mode consider experimenting with it on your family’s trip to a national park. This particular mode is ideal for capturing wide vistas and grand sweeping scenes.

Zoom. Most cameras these days (both digital and film) feature a built-in zoom. Don’t forget it’s there. Use it when you are far from your subject and are unable to physically get closer. If you are not satisfied with your camera’s built-in zoom you have the option of purchasing additional lenses such as a telephoto lens. Shooting with a telephoto lens gives you the chance to document wildlife without endangering your safety in the process.

Lighting. Don’t be fooled into thinking that the best pictures are taken in the bright sunlight. Photo experts (and your own trial and error) will tell you that the best outdoor lighting condition is an overcast sky. Bright sunlight causes subjects to squint and it also tends to wash out color.
