Summer…Do You Have More Work, or Less?

In the publishing world, where I do some of my work, things tend to slow down in the summer. It is the perfect time to catch up on tasks that have been put off and do some organization things to lay the groundwork for when things pick up again. However, in the special events and conference planning work I also do—summer is a fairly busy time. I know some home business owners who actually do the bulk of their business in the brief summer months—their seasonal businesses are all about craft markets, farmer’s markets and tourism. How about you? Does your work load pile on or ease up when the summer sun hits?

Some people actually choose their home business based on whether or not they will be working in the summer. I know one person who is a teacher and works his traditional teaching job during the school year, and then focuses on his home business in the summer. Others, especially those with small children, need to have more flexibility and time off in the summer months—so a business that has its busy times at other parts of the year (during the holidays, for example) is better suited. Some individuals really need and like to be able to take some time off for vacations and leisure during the summer.

Between personal choice, family need, and the actual ups and downs of a particular industry—summer can be a busy time, or a time for taking it easy. How about your home business—do you have more work to do during June, July and August, or do things slack off and give you a much-needed respite? AND, did you know this when you chose your business and choose accordingly, or has it been something you’ve learned as you’ve built your business?
