Summer is here and most of us are spending more time outdoors. The summer sun is strong, so use care when engaging in outdoor activities. You can enjoy the sun safely by following a few simple tips.
Sunscreen is safe for pregnant women, so don’t hesitate to apply it liberally before heading outdoors. Choose at least an SPF 15 and carry it with you. If you are spending time in the water, be sure to reapply the sunscreen throughout the day.
You can protect your skin with clothing as well. Clothing and bathing suits that are made with special material that doesn’t allow UV rays to penetrate it are available. A hat can protect the top of your head, ears and face from the sun’s rays. Don’t forget sunglasses to protect your eyes.
Just because you remembered your sunscreen doesn’t mean you can stay outside all day. You may find that you get overheated easier than before you were pregnant. This is very normal and is the result of your growing body and hormonal fluctuations.
Keep in mind that if you are getting overheated, so is your baby. This can be dangerous for the baby. If you find that you are getting overheated, head inside for a while. Eat lunch in an air conditioned cafe or go home for a nap in the middle of the day.
Time your outdoor excursions around the sun’s rays. The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If possible, head out later in the day or early in the morning when temperatures are cooler.
It’s important to stay well hydrated in the summer months. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Carry bottled water with you to be sure you are staying hydrated. The body can dehydrate quickly in hot weather, so pay close attention to your fluid intake.
