Sunday Travel Funnies: “TAXI!”

If you are superstitious and planning a trip to San Francisco in the near future, you’re probably better off leaving your fear of the number 666 at home… especially if need to rely on taxi cabs to get around.

The head of the city’s taxi commission says he will not be getting rid of taxi medallion No. 666, regardless of the fact that some riders refuse to patronize a cab bearing the number of Satan. A cab driver who had “666” assigned to him last year recently asked the agency to retire the number because it had brought him nothing but bad luck.

Let’s just say the driver got little support from his fellow drivers when he decided to ask for a new number. When the issue went up for debate a couple of weeks ago other cabbies showed up and added their own opinions… and a bit of comic relief.

“How dare you take Lucifer’s number away,” remarked the president of the cab drivers union, who was sporting red horns at the meeting. “This is a serious issue.”

In the end the commission voted 5-1 to keep No. 666 on the streets. The taxi commissioner noted that the 666 medallion had been around for more than three decades and San Francisco has somehow survived.

Now, from an unlucky taxi to a cab company, which volunteered to give someone a lucky break. A taxi company in Iowa made headlines this week when it agreed to keep a human heart, en route to a tissue processing company in Atlanta.

According to the cab company’s manager, the good deed came after an airline refused to keep the heart overnight at the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids. When the air carrier refused to store the organ the cab company stepped in. Officials from Aeropoint Delivery Solutions of Marietta, Georgia told the cab company that ice in the packaging would keep the heart intact, so workers at the taxi facility agreed to keep the package with them.

The heart ended up getting out on a flight the next day. As for why the airline declined to keep the heart, officials with the carrier claimed they didn’t have the appropriate facilities to store it, and probably more telling they “didn’t want to accept liability for a heart or any other package.”

All hail the noble Iowa taxi drivers!
