Sunday Travel Funnies: WHOAAA! A Two-Headed Turtle

After a brief hiatus the Sunday Travel Funnies are back! A ton of humorous travel tales have transpired since we’ve been away so let’s get right to it…

WHOAAA! Look out for some laughs if you are traveling through Oak Lawn, Illinois.

Apparently, for some motorists a big red stop sign is not enough to get them to apply the brakes. Which is why officials in the Chicago suburb recently installed additional signs beneath the traditional stop signs with messages that include “WHOAAA” or “Stop … and smell the roses.”

Oak Lawn’s mayor says the idea is to get drivers to sit up and take notice of traffic signs.

“You’ve got people on their cell phones, their BlackBerries and iPods while driving,” Mayor Dave Heilmann recently told news reporters. “Those are all distractions. Hopefully, when they see a sign they’re not expecting it might make them stop.”

According to Heilmann, more than 50 of the new signs have been placed throughout the city. They look similar to standard stop signs, but instead of just “Stop” they say “Stop … right there pilgrim” and “Stop … in the naame of love.” (Naame… as in the way the Supremes would sing the word.)

“WHOAAA” might be an appropriate reaction to this next travel tale.

If you are a pet lover who enjoys peering at unusual animals then you might consider visiting Norristown, Pennsylvania.

The city is the new home to a rare two-headed turtle. According to news reports, crowds of visitors have been flocking to a local pet store where the exotic animal is currently residing.

According to the store manager, the 2-month-old turtle, actually a conjoined red-eared slider twins, is so small that it fits on a silver dollar. The turtle has two heads, which stick out from opposite ends of its shell, along with a pair of front feet on each side. However, the turtle has just one set of back feet and one tail.

Animal experts say the species can live 15 to 20 years, which means you don’t have to worry about making the trip to Pennsylvania by Halloween. The turtle will likely be around long enough for you to plan your summer vacation around seeing it.
