Sunday Travel Funnies: Why Did the Turtle Cross the Road?

Any guesses? Well, we’ll likely never know because the little critter didn’t quite finish his journey. But that didn’t stop him from creating a catastrophe in the process.

Authorities in New Jersey say the reptile caused one heck of an accident on the Garden State Parkway a few days ago. According to police, a woman reportedly swerved to avoid hitting the turtle as it crawled across the northbound lanes of the busy expressway. In the process she lost control of her car, crashed through a guardrail and tumbled down an embankment before the car flipped over onto its roof. Luckily, she was wearing her seatbelt and police say she was not critically injured. Though, the same cannot be said for her car… or the turtle.

State police say a vehicle that had been driving behind the woman (who risked her life to avoid hitting the turtle) completely flattened the small reptile. No word on what the woman’s reaction was following the news that her good deed didn’t pay off in the end.

Fliers in Los Angeles did not have much better luck with their travel plans today. (Okay, what they went through was far less traumatizing as a car wreck.) According to news reports, fire sprinklers at the Los Angeles International Airport accidentally turned on Sunday after a water pipe broke, soaking passengers waiting for flights and those picking up their bags.

The mishap caused authorities to temporarily evacuate Terminal One. The sprinklers were finally turned off, but not before flooding the baggage claim and screening areas. In addition, several flights were delayed in the ensuing chaos.

One witness told local television reporters that when the sprinklers activated people were rushing toward the doors and knocking over fellow passengers waiting in the check-in lines. Others say it was pandemonium with people screaming, yelling, and running for the exit.
Many passengers reportedly missed their flights during the evacuation and were being rerouted last night.

To make matters worse, the affected passengers were forced to stand in long security lines that snaked in front of the terminal, in order to be readmitted into the airport. Inside, check-in counters were covered in plastic and airport crews were forced to shut down the baggage claim area while the water was mopped up. In addition, garbage cans and buckets were spread out in a large section of the terminal to gather water that continued to fall from ceiling tiles.

Can you image being a part of that nightmare? Talk about a summer vacation horror story.
