Sunday Travel Funnies—Not So Funny After All

Each Sunday I try to round up some amusing travel related stories to share with you (hence the title of the series: “Sunday Travel Funnies.”) However, this week I am tweaking the theme. With the price of gas inching closer to record highs and the spike in the number of drunk drivers on the road I decided to go a different route this week. Consider it the anti-“Sunday Travel Funny” blog.

HOW COULD THEY?

Talk about kicking someone when he is down… Here’s a story of a guy who owns a gas station in the northern portion of Wisconsin who out of the goodness of his heart offers discounted gas to senior citizens and people supporting youth sports. For months the gas station owner has been offering senior citizens a 2-cent per gallon price break and discount cards that let sports boosters pay 3 cents less per gallon. Sounds incredibly generous, especially since gas is currently sitting at $3.29 per gallon, right?

Wrong… according to the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, which maintains that those deals are too good. So good, in fact, that they violate Wisconsin’s Unfair Sales Act, which requires stations to sell gas for about 9.2 percent more than the wholesale price.

The gas station owner says he received a letter from the state that says he would be sued if he did not raise his prices. According to the state, he could be penalized for each discounted gallon he sells, with the fine determined by a judge.

So much for wanting to be a nice guy.

A LESSON LEARNED

Driving drunk is no laughing matter. So you have to wonder why many people have chuckled after hearing about this next sad incident. According to Arkansas police, a man who ordered food at a McDonald’s drive-thru has been charged with drunk driving.

In a police report, restaurant employees say they called officers about 12:30 a.m. Saturday after waiting 15 minutes for the man to drive from the first window to the second window in the drive-thru. According to police, officers found the man asleep behind the wheel midway between the first and second window with the engine running and his right foot on the brake. The report said the man’s blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.

I’m just glad they got him at the drive-thru before he could hurt anyone on the road.
