It’s a bird. It’s a plane. Hold on. (Cue the screeching tires.) Wrong superhero.
Movie fans know by now that “Spider-Man 3” opens in just a few short weeks. The film reunites actors Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson and is expected to be one the summer’s hottest releases.
If you’ve seen the trailer for the movie (I just saw it for the first time last night during “Dancing with the Stars”), then you know that the sequel features a black clad Spidey. A bit of irony, I thought, after hearing Spider-Man the musical is making its way to the Great White Way.
Marvel comic fans rejoice. The news is true. According to Marvel executives, a Broadway musical based on the web-slinging superhero is in the works. And, while I am no where near as big a Spider-Man fan as my brother, I was thrilled to hear that the music and lyrics for the musical are being composed by two of my favorite musicians in the world–U2 frontman Bono and guitarist The Edge.
The chairman of Marvel Studios also revealed that the Broadway adaptation would be directed by Tony winner Julie Taymor (she won Tony Awards for her roles as director and costume designer of the Broadway hit “The Lion King”).
Everyone involved in the project remarked to news reporters that they were thrilled to be part of Broadway history. Fans of the Great White Way may be surprised to learn that “Spider-Man” will be the first time a Marvel Comics character has been the subject of a show on Broadway.
Before you run to the phone and dial Ticket Star’s number you should know that an opening date has yet to be determined. In fact, casting will not be complete until the summer.
While Spider-Man slings his web in the Big Apple, Batman is having a rough go of things in the Windy City.
According to news reports, a fire broke out in a vacant post office today where a movie crew had been filming scenes for an upcoming “Batman” sequel.
A responding Chicago fire chief told reporters insulation inside the building’s “very old ventilation system” caught fire and the blaze had nothing to do with the filming. He also noted that there were no injuries.
A few weeks ago, the Chicago Tribune reported the “Batman” movie crew would be filming in and around the city for a couple of weeks.
