For some kids, getting a book in their Christmas stocking is about as exciting as receiving underwear, a toothbrush, or an apple.
Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way.
Shatter the myth this holiday season by gifting your good guy or gal with the following super reads that pit bad blood against legendary super heroes:
Superman Classic: Attack of the Toyman
Don’t let the name fool you. Toyman is no Santa Claus. In fact, the diabolical villain is trying to play all of Metropolis. His first move: Unleash an attack by attaching explosives to remote-control cars. Toyman’s evil plan continues to unfold as he sends the tiny vehicles to the companies that shut down his toy store.
“In order to succeed in business,” muses the madman, “you have to blow away the competition.”
Toyman doesn’t play fair. Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen learn that lesson the hard way… and it may be just a matter of time before Superman is schooled too.
Young readers will feel the heat as they make their way through Superman Classic: Attack of the Toyman. The action-packed book is filled with vibrant illustrations that make the characters appear to pop from the pages.
Find out if the Man of Steel makes mincemeat of the evil Toyman before his possessed playthings destroy all of Metropolis.
Batman Classic: Batman versus Man-Bat
Batman. Man-Bat. Confused? Don’t be. They aren’t one in the same. A helpful character guide at the beginning of this I Can Read Book will set you straight in no time.
The simple design is fabulous for young readers, who can now decipher the storyline via words, instead of relying solely on pictures. Starting on page one, kids get the 411 on Man-Bat whose real name is Dr. Kirk Langstrom. The scientist and bat expert was desperate to find a cure for his growing hearing loss, so he created a special serum that he tested on himself. Turned out to be a bad move.
“Instead of curing him, the chemical turned him into a man-sized bat.”
Man-Bat makes it his mission to terrorize innocent citizens and for some reason (perhaps because the majority of the story takes place at night) the residents of Gotham City mistaken the heinous-looking winged beast for Batman.
Interestingly, Man-Bat has brown fur covering his entire body, as well as sharp claws and fangs covered with foaming saliva. Not exactly Batman’s identical twin, but still, the Caped Crusader’s reputation is at stake so the two must tangle at some point.
In Batman Classic: Batman versus Man-Bat, pint-sized bookworms will get an eyeful from the colorful animated illustrations. In addition, they will be thrilled to see whether or not Batman can take down his dastardly doppelganger.
You can get both super reads from HarperCollins’ website and at discount retailers nationwide.
