Super Shepard’s Pie for Christmas

Shepard’s Pie ranks up there as one of the most popular comfort foods in the world. This classic homestyle dish exudes warmth and is especially welcome on a cold winter’s day.

If you are looking for an affordable Christmas dish that is loaded with flavor, you might consider making the following recipes. The first is for a Traditional Shepard’s Pie with ground beef. It is rich and hearty, but doesn’t require a ton of prep time.

The second recipe is for a Ground Turkey Shepard’s Pie. It appeals to those who might be watching their fat intake, but still want to indulge in a satisfying dish this holiday season.

TRADITIONAL SHEPARD’S PIE

Ingredients:

1 pound ground beef

1/2 cup chopped onion

1/2 cup sliced mushrooms

1 clove garlic, minced

1 jar (12 ounces) mushroom gravy

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 cup frozen peas

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

2 1/4 cups mashed potatoes

Paprika

Directions:

Heat oven to 375 degrees.

Spray 12-inch skillet with cooking spray. Add beef, onion, mushrooms, garlic, cook over medium heat 8 to 10 minutes, stirring often until thoroughly cooked, or until beef is not pink. Break beef into crumbles. Stir in mushroom gravy, Worcestershire sauce and peas, season with salt and pepper. Heat mixture over medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Spoon beef mixture into ungreased baking dish. With large spoon, cover top of beef mixture with dollops of mashed potatoes. Sprinkle lightly with paprika.

Bake 20 minutes or until the potatoes are set and lightly browned.

Serve hot.

GROUND TURKEY SHEPARD’S PIE

Ingredients:

3 pounds Ground Turkey

1 medium onion

2 stalks celery

1/2 large green pepper

6-10 green olives pitted chopped

5 cups prepared mashed potatoes

1 can (12 oz.) tomato paste

12 oz. Cheddar cheese

1 teaspoon garlic

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 1/2 teaspoon Oregano

Salt and Pepper to taste

1/4 cup water

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cut up celery and onion in bite size pieces, saute in oil, until onion is translucent. Add ground turkey, olives and peppers and mix well.

Add all spices and 1/4-cup water.

Let simmer 10 minutes.

Add tomato paste and mix well.

Place the meat mixture on the bottom of a casserole dish and cover with pre-made mashed potatoes. Top potatoes with the cheese and bake for 20 minutes.

Serve hot.
