Super Summer Travel Ideas

If you really want to heat things up this summer, then head to San Antonio. The popular Texas travel destination is unveiling sun-sational deals for visitors this month.

For starters, the city’s popular River Walk has expanded. The new 2-mile paved stretch doubles the River Walk in size. It winds away from the city center, passes the San Antonio Museum of Art and the restored Pearl Brewery, and along the myriad of margarita-serving outdoor cafes and Tex-Mex restaurants.

To celebrate the River Walk’s expansion several eateries and bars are offering drink and food specials throughout the summer.

Nine more miles in the $279 million project are due by 2014.

Meanwhile, if you are a theme park junkie, then you must enter the following summer travel contest:

The Orlando’s tourism bureau is running an “Orlando Makes Me Smile” marketing campaign. The winners get 67 days of lodging in a downtown condominium, $25,000 cash, a rental car and admission to everything from Gatorland to the Orlando Museum of Art. In return, they are expected to deliver daily reports via blogging, Twitter and other social media outlets.

Basically, if you can smile, write, and are a proficient “tweeter” you can score a sweet job. You also have to have the stamina to withstand more than two month’s worth of unrelenting fun at Orlando’s theme parks and other attractions. Tourism officials calculated it would take 67 eight-hour days to experience every area attraction.

The task begins in late August and ends in early November. Applicants can be any combination of friends or family but must be over age 21. The deadline is June 30. You can sign up here.

Finally, if you are looking for wild family fun this summer, head to the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas. That’s where you will find the new Tiger Trek attraction, which features two Malayan tigers and two Amur tigers, along with red pandas and Burmese brown antlered deer.
