Took us a while to get this blog off the ground, but let’s take a look at where we stand today with our Super Tuesday primaries in 4 major states. If you were ever a fan of the West Wing, this year’s Democratic Primary actually reminds me of the Santos campaign, the jockeying for wins and the no clear cut victor heading into the Democratic National Convention.
The Republican Ticket
Currently, favored son Senator John McCain of Arizona holds 1,047 delegates for the Republican National Convention. In order to earn the nomination, he just needs 1,191 delegates. Chances are good, he will make a lock on the 256 delegates that are up for grabs today, March 4th. If he wins his primaries, then he’s definitely the Republican Party’s nominee to take up the reigns of President of the United States in 2009.
The Democratic Ticket
While the Republicans seem firmly decided on their candidate, the Democrats are providing one of the most interesting primaries in my lifetime as candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama challenge each other for the nomination. Both are ground breakers, Clinton could potentially be the first female President and Obama the first Black American President. Both are liberals. Both have a lot to offer and both serve in the Senate.
So what are they looking for today? Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont will all be voting in their primaries today. Senators Obama and Clinton, however, are in a tight race with Obama carrying the momentum into today. The key today will be what delegates that they carry today. Currently, Obama has 1,378 and Clinton has 1,269.
Neither of the two candidates has 2,025 they need to secure the Democratic nomination. If Clinton secures a number of states today, she will continue to be in the tight race. Her husband (former President Bill Clinton) believes she will win the nomination if she can carry Ohio and Texas. But if she doesn’t win them, will she continue to contest Barack Obama’s nomination and could the Democratic National Convention promise us an entertaining and democratic floor fight?
