For eleven-year-old Peter Hatcher, life is just complicated. Not only does he have a little brother named Farley Drexel who prefers to be called Fudge, but his parents have just announced that they are going to have another baby! Between dealing with a new baby sister and moving to Princeton, New Jersey, Peter finds himself in even more uncertain situations that ever in “Superfudge.”
Fudge is always a problem for Peter. After Mr. and Mrs. Hatcher announce the pregnancy, Fudge asks where babies come from. Once Fudge is graced with this new knowledge he decides to tell everyone he sees, embarrassing Peter to no end. Angry that he is no longer the baby of the family, Fudge is constantly trying to get rid of Tamara Roxanne — or Tootsie as she is called — by offering her to guests and people on the street. He even decides to play a game of hide-and-seek with her one day by hiding her in the front hall closet! Peter is even more annoyed when Fudge gets a pet myna bird which he names Uncle Feather. Uncle Feather repeats everything that Fudge says, but his favorite phrase is “Bonjour, stupid!”
Dealing with a move far away from the city and his best friend Jimmy Fargo causes Peter more difficulty in addition to adjusting to a new baby sister. The fact that Fudge will be starting kindergarten early and will be attending the same school as Peter is another pain. However, Peter meets a boy his own age named Alex. Alex tells Peter that he digs up worms and sells them to one of the neighbors, Mrs. Muldour. They decide that she must use them in her cooking. Will they accept a treat when Mrs. Muldour offers them some cookies? Alex quickly becomes Peter’s best friend. When Peter’s best friend from New York City comes to visit, will he and Alex get along?
“Superfudge” is the third book in Judy Blume series known as The Fudge Books. It is a great continuation of the troubles that Peter Hatcher has with his little brother.
