Weight loss often starts at the supermarket. If you make good choices at the store with your groceries, then you are more likely to stick with healthy foods. After all, cookies that don’t exist in your home are hard to eat. (And yes, while it is true that some of us have been known to get out of the house and drive for peanut butter ice cream, the effort is usually not worth it.)
I take some of my best frugal living strategies, that is, ways to save money, and apply them somewhat to weight loss strategies, that is, ways to save fat and calories.
First of all, before you even step foot in the store, have something to eat. Make sure your belly is full with a good, healthy, meal, and you will be less likely to add unhealthy impulse purchases to your cart. Studies, both official and not, show that when you shop while hungry, you also have a larger grocery purchase.
The other thing that you should do before you go to the store is to make a list of the items that you need. Once you have that list, you can make a commitment to following it. If you group your purchases by aisle when you list them, you can avoid going down extra aisles. Being able to grab and go means better choices. Plus, you’ll save money, too!
Did you know that the healthiest and most basic choices are at the ends of the store? By keeping these items, such as produce and milk far apart, it forces you to walk the length of the store. The stores hope that this will make you put a couple of extra things into your cart on the way. Ever notice and the soda and the cookies are all in the middle and very easy to find?
