We are all faced with times of trial in our lives. It can be difficult to know what to do and how to do it. It can also be difficult to reach out to others when they are going through a trial. Sometimes people are reluctant to share their trials because they do not want to be a burden or to bother other people. Some trials are too personal to openly share with others. If you know someone is struggling through a trial here are four simple things to do for her.
1) Pray for the person who is struggling. Prayer is a wonderful gift that you can give to others. I know that Heavenly Father hears and answers prayers. By taking the time to pray for that person you are showing a great love for him. You are also asking for Heavenly Father to help him. Prayer can be done quietly without embarrassing anyone. This is helpful if you know that they would not want you to know they are struggling.
2) You can easily call up and see if there is anything that you can do to help that person. This can be worded unobtrusively. A simple offer of help can make a world of difference for those who are struggling through a difficult trial. Depending on the situation you could offer to run errands, make meals, baby-sit or clean the house. Often the best form of service is a listening ear.
3) If a friend has confided in you of a personal struggle or trial, it is best to keep your friend’s confidence. Occasionally you may feel prompted to talk to the bishop about the person, but otherwise you should not be telling everyone in the ward what is happening.
4) If someone is struggling it is nice to send a note or drop by homemade bread or cookies. Often just knowing that someone is thinking about them makes a huge difference in a person’s day.
