When your spouse gets a calling in essence you receive the calling as well. Well not quite, but you do have to deal with allowing your spouse the extra time that he or she needs to complete the calling. This can be a difficult at times. I think that Bishop’s families and Relief Society President’s families often have the most that they have to deal with in terms of the whole family being affected by the calling. Here are four ways that you can support your spouse in his or her calling.
1) Allow your spouse time to prepare for or complete his calling. It can be difficult to do the job that you agreed to do, if your spouse is showing resentment about the calling at home. When you sustain your spouse, then you need to support them in fulfilling the calling. If the calling is putting too much a strain on the family you should talk to the bishop.
2) It is important to be willing to watch the children when needed. This may mean taking the baby while your wife teaches Primary or Relief Society. It may mean putting the kids to bed on your own when he goes to Young Men’s or Scouts on Wednesdays.
3) Take the time to listen to your spouse as she bounces ideas for her lesson off of you. It is also important to allow her to vent her frustrations in the calling. This should help her to let go of the negative feelings and experiences that she may have.
4) If your spouse needs copies made or you to pick up items, please help. Running the little errands or helping to set up can really to make a stressful job easier. Also if you need to pick up a little slack around the house, try to do so. This can help make the entire family feel less stress.
