Last month I told you the story of Heather and Jeremy who were blessed with a little miracle named Lillian. I met Heather on the same website as I met Emily, who also experienced a miracle pregnancy around the same time. Both conceived naturally despite the medical or historical indication that it was not possible. Both beat these odds and gave birth to beautiful babies.
Emily met her husband, Eric, when she was in her freshman year of college in 2004. Eric attended her home church while she was attending college two hours away, and so they had to get to know each other on the weekends. All she ever wanted in life was to get married to a wonderful man and have children. She didn’t really care about a career or finishing college, and so in May of 2006, Emily put her college career aside to marry the man of her dreams.
After they had been married for about a year, they started trying to conceive. After six months of TTC and no baby, her gynecologist referred them to a fertility specialist, who ran tests on both of them. Unfortunately the tests came back with unwelcome results. That’s when they knew they were going to have problems. Emily felt so out of control. She was heartbroken that her dream of becoming a mother may never come true.
Determined to start a family, Emily and Eric did three intrauterine insemination (IUI) procedures and attempted to do in vitro fertilization (IVF), but the drugs used in preparation for the procedure weren’t working.
They were about to start another IVF cycle when Emily took a pregnancy test. Her period hadn’t shown up yet and she wanted to test just in case, never dreaming it would be positive.
It was positive.
At first, she thought she took an ovulation test, which always shows two lines, but it was, in fact, a home pregnancy test. She just couldn’t believe that after two years of trying, they did it on their own. Even Eric thought there might be something wrong with the test. “God gave us our miracle,” she says.
Their struggle with infertility did not vanish when Emily became pregnant. Her worries carried over and every little cramp made her ready for more disappointment, thinking they might lose the baby. “It’s amazing how discouraged infertility can make you.” But her worries ended up being in vain; Lucas William was born at 10:58am on a Wednesday morning in May. He weighed in at 7lbs and 7 oz.
“Every day I thank the Lord for our little boy and have a teary moment over him.”
