Surprise Hearts

I asked my daughter what she was going to do at her youth group tonight, and she said, “Give someone a heart attack.” Er, come again?

Turns out that’s a good thing. A heart attack, in this case, is something her group has done before with great results. It sounds like a lot of fun, and might be something you want to try with your own family.

The idea is to pick a person you want to surprise. The youth groups target widows and single parents and other people who they feel could use a little cheer. Then, when that person isn’t home or they think they can get away with it, they “attack.” That means they paste hearts all over the yard, front door and wherever else seems appropriate. The idea is to leave no question with the victim, I mean, recipient, that they are loved.

There are many variations on this activity. One is to leave a note with the recipient asking them to attack someone else, and so on, thereby spreading the love. In my opinion, though, it’s best just to let it be a surprise without the obligation.

Also, you need to take into consideration the health, mobility and time of the recipient. If you’re attacking an older widow with arthritis, it wouldn’t be much of a treat for her to have to bend down to pick up a hundred hearts. One big heart taped gently to the door might be a better option.

What to use for the hearts? Construction paper is fine if there’s no rain expected. Fun foam is another option for smaller hearts. Try taping the hearts to sticks and poking them into the ground or taping a Hershey’s kiss or other treat to the hearts. Long paper-chain style hearts are fun for decorating, too.

So get out there and attack somebody!
