The end of November and into the New Year is when many people struggle with fitness. This is a time of year where weight is gained due to the holiday celebrations.
In addition many people who got their exercise outdoors are now stuck inside during these cold winter months and lose their motivation. Then there are people who have no problem letting loose because they figure once the New Year comes, they can start again.
You can survive the holiday season and still maintain a fitness routine. It won’t be easy but with some discipline and the right perspective you can do it.
It really all starts in your mind. If you have the mindset that you can mess up now and make up for it later you are doomed. You have to change the way you look at this time of year. It is not the time to eat a dozen Christmas cookies or drink a gallon of eggnog.
It is also not the time to sit in front of the television for hours on end or forego a trip to the gym. You have to decide that you are going to have a new outlook on the holiday season.
Think of it this way…why destroy what you have worked for in just one month? It will make getting back into a routine so much harder come January. Because of that, it will make sticking to a fitness routine more challenging than it needs to be. If you keep on track you don’t have to worry about trying to get yourself motivated again.
All you are really doing is taking several steps back. Recovering all those backward steps is not going to be easy and you are going to be frustrated.
Nothing magical is going to happen in January. We somehow get the idea that we gain all this motivation and drive when the New Year comes. The reality is that it typically lasts a few days. Then we are right back to where we started.
The truth is that fitness should be a lifestyle. You don’t take a break from things that are part of your lifestyle. So don’t use the holiday season as a reason to take a break from fitness.
You will feel so much better about yourself come January if you can keep up your fitness routine through December. Surviving the holidays can be done with the right attitude.
