Now that summer is here you might be considering enrolling your toddler in swim lessons. If so, you have plenty of options to choose from. Private fitness clubs, the YMCA, city Parks and Recreation Departments and swim schools offer lessons to toddlers and parents.
However before signing up for a particular class it’s a good idea to do some research first. For example, if price is a factor, then you might want to stick with city-run swim classes versus pricier private ones. You also want to find out about class size. Ideally, you want the class to be small enough so the instructor can maintain control without compromising safety. Larger classes often include an instructor’s helper, but not always. If size is a major factor to you, then consider paying for private lessons.
Regardless of whether or not you hire a private teacher or you enroll in a group lesson, be sure to inquire about certified instructors. You want someone who has been trained as a teacher and knows all of the safety measures associated with the pool. What’s more, never be afraid to ask to view an instructor’s certificates and references. This is your right as a parent and consumer.
A good instructor should be patient and knowledgeable. In addition, he or she should make the class fun for your toddler. You want your child to leave the class being comfortable in the water. A good instructor will take her job seriously, but also know how to playfully interact with her pint-sized students.
If you have the time to do so, consider visiting several swim classes. Watch the interaction between the instructor and each student/parent. Look for smiles and the progress made by each child, and then decide if the class will be the right fit for your son or daughter.
