There was big excitement around our house today. I was finally feeling well enough to get the Christmas decorations up. At least the inside ones.
I’m a little behind on it this year. I usually do it around Thanksgiving, but we were in Denver. But this morning while Wayne commandeered my office for a conference call, I decided it was time to break out the garland and trees and our other holiday trimmings.
That’s when it hit me that this is Tabby’s first Christmas. At least with us. She was most likely born before this time last year, but I don’t know how she spent it. If she had an inside home or if she was a barn cat. (There’s a barn and some farms near where I found her so she could have come from there.)
She had a big time helping me dress our banisters in garland and bows. At one point she picked up one end of it in her mouth and trucked down the stairs to the front room, the rest of the garland trailing after her. Then she promptly fell over and began wrestling with it. It was the cutest site and had me in stitches and wishing I’d had a video camera at the ready.
The bows were also entertaining. She watched with great interest as I attached them to parts of the garland, and when I threw one for her to play with she ran and tossed it in the air in that funny playful way she has.
My friend Brenda had given me this cool water globe thing that plays music and I showed that to Tabby along with this animated lighthouse I have. I thought she’d be interested in the seagulls that fly around it, but she liked the snow globe thing best. Once the music stopped she pawed the wind up key then sat with her big eyes focused as I set the snow inside swirling to tempo once again.
Then it was time to set up the trees. I have two small trees that are less than two feet tall each that I’ve had since our apartment days when we couldn’t afford anything more elaborate. (Both because we didn’t have the space nor the money.) A few years ago I bought a six foot tall fiber optic tree that Walmart had on sale that now serves as our official tree.
Tabby had a high time helping me set all the trees up around the house. As predicted, she knocked over the smaller ones then grabbed on the lower branches of the fiber optic one. Which is something her brother Mr. Meow likes to do too. (Which he did later.)
Then it was time to do the mantel. Pulling out Murphy and Mr. Meow’s stockings and stocking holders made me realize we need to add one more this year for Miss Tabby. But until we do she’s having fun swiping at the other two that are already up.
But she hasn’t seen the best part yet. Wait until the presents start arriving. I have to figure out where to stash them, otherwise my little Shredinator’s going to think Christmas is even better than catnip!
