What is a Commune?

When I was a child in the ‘60s, I remember hearing about communes. Back then, at least in my household, communes were not looked upon favorably. I guess it wasn’t so much the idea behind it, but the fact that those darn counterculture hippies were living together and that just wasn’t the American way. Some communes, including that loosely defined by the Manson family, even became known as cults. Now that I look back, the idea of a commune seems pretty cool. A community of people living together, working the land for their food, and helping each other – how … Continue reading

Bea Arthur Dead at 86

I was sad today to read that Bea Arthur died. I know many of those reading this blog will remember her as Dorothy Zbornak from “The Golden Girls.” Dorothy was a great character – my favorite on the show – but when I read of Bea’s death, I actually thought of another of her television characters – Maude. “Maude” first aired on CBS in September 1972, but the character had earlier appeared in “All in the Family” as Edith’s cousin. If ever anyone could take on Archie Bunker, it was Maude. Maude was a modern woman in a time when … Continue reading

The First Celebrity Power Couple?

Last night, I was watching Smokey and the Bandit. I know it is dated, corny, and politically incorrect, but I remember my parents taking me to the theater to see this 1977 hit movie and I love it to this day. If you have seen it, you may be surprised to know it was actually nominated for an Oscar. Not Best Picture, but Best Film Editing (hey, it is still a nomination!). Anyhow, as I watched it, something struck me. Before there was Bennifer, before there was Brangelina, there was a couple I like to call Burly – Burt Reynolds … Continue reading

Singer Meat Loaf Reaches an Agreement Over Album Phrase

I do not know about you, but I think Meat Loaf’s 1977 album, “Bat Out of Hell“, is one of the best ever made. Maybe it is because I was a teen when it was released, but songs like You Took the Words Right out Of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night), Two out of Three Ain’t Bad, and Paradise by the Dashboard Light just spoke to me. And even today, I still hold this album in a special place in my heart. As apparently do both Meat Loaf (whose real name is Marvin Lee Aday) himself and Jim Steinman, the … Continue reading

70s Music – Top Ten Albums of the Decade

When I first thought of this blog, I thought “Oh man, this will be easy.” Turned out it was actually difficult. There was a lot of good music in the 70s from all genres. There are albums I overlooked, but this list is my own personal list. 10. Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On (1971) This album showed a new side of Marvin, already a popular artist when he released What’s Going On. He incorporated in it all the social issues of the time including poverty, drug abuse, and war. 9. Van Halen – Van Halen (1978) This album shows … Continue reading

70s Music – Disco

This summer, VH1 will have its second installment of the “I Love the 70s” show. This new series is called “I Love the 70s – Volume 2” and I will be there to watch ever minute of it! I was born in 1963, so I was between the ages of 7 and 17 during the 70s. I often consider myself a child of the 80s, but I do love everything about the 70s, especially the music. If you checked my iPod, you would find more music from the 70s than any other decade. One of my favorite genres of the … Continue reading
