Towers of Blocks

When Heather invited us all to Take Back 9-11 and move on, I sat here for perhaps thrifty minutes. Eyes slowly unfocused, the white screen fuzzing away as dark images swirled through my mind, morphing into some bizarre collage of thoughts, of pieces, of blocks of memories. About David B., a firefighter I knew in fourth grade who I dared to eat a slice of sicilian pizza covered with an entire jar of garlic salt, and who promised to marry me someday. About the numerous police officers in the neighborhood who offered me candy and magic tricks when I visited … Continue reading

The Widows of 9/11: Already Remarrying?

Today is a sad day in American History. Who doesn’t remember where they were this day six years ago when the world as we knew it changed forever? No matter where we were, we were all affected, yes. But there are some who were affected much more than others. Those who lived in New York, or in Washington, or who had loved ones on any of the planes that went down. I got to thinking about the widows of 9/11 after reading an article in Woman’s World about one who found love again. A love that has since led to … Continue reading

The Day the United States once again became United

I wrote my feelings down on the anniversary of September 11, 2001 and later posted it here in, “September 11: In Honor of the Fallen and Those Who Defend Us.” In it, I talked about how the United States once again became united, on that fateful Tuesday six years ago. Sadly, we do not feel very united these days. There seems to be a great divide, often partisan in nature. The left-right paradigm seems to ensure it and our leaders seem to promote it. They have never found a wedge issue or a scandal they didn’t like. They toss these … Continue reading

Outdoor Home Improvement Safety Tips

There are many safety tips to help ensure that your outdoor home improvement projects are completed without injury or damage. Here are three important points you need to keep in mind when you decide to do it yourself: Wear your Gear Always use appropriate protective gear. There are very few projects that don’t require some type of safety gear. Safety glasses should be worn for most every project. Cut-resistant gloves are another staple of the home improvement enthusiast. Don’t do projects in bare feet either. It’s always better to be safe than sorry. Watch those Wires Of course, you need … Continue reading

Free 911 Kids’ T-shirt

Have you ever dialed 911? If you’ve dialed it on your cell phone, it’s a little confusing. It locks out all other calls. That can be a good thing, but not if you’ve just called your husband, gotten disconnected, then called 911 right away! The last time I called, it was for a van in front of me whose horn kept going off while they were driving. Duh. I didn’t realize that was a car alarm and the van was stolen. I just figured it was someone having trouble with their horn. The first time I ever called 911 was … Continue reading

A Mother Remembers 9/11

This morning, my fifteen year old son Garrett said, “Mom, it’s 9/11. I wonder if they’ll have a moment of silence at school today.” I replied, “Well, they had a moment of silence for Steve Irwin. I certainly hope they’ll have one for 9/11.” We remembered what happened five years ago–that horrific day that stained our souls. “I was in fifth grade,” my son said. On that day, I was still single after my divorce. I lived in a different house, and had a different perspective on life. That morning, my brother phoned. I remember thinking it was strange for … Continue reading

Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning?

Today marks the five year anniversary of a tragic event or series of events, that changed our history books forever. As scrapbookers, most of us commemorated the events of the day by doing a scrapbook layout. In fact, I created mine during a scrapbook challenge on a message board that I belong to. It was five years ago that I created that layout, and it was simply nothing more than a “this day in history” type of page. I didn’t do much journaling besides to explain the events and what unfolded throughout the day. I included a time line and … Continue reading

Our Own Terrorist Aboard

It’s without hesitation we take this day to remember the victims of 9/11 and pray for their families. I hope these last 5 years have brought a sense of newness and found strength to those who’ve endured tragedy. May the arms of God surround you today. Inspired by our pastor’s sermon, I’d like to further elaborate about a terrorist we all have on board our own lives. An enemy that would prefer us to remain seated and calm while he takes over, keeping us ineffective for Christ, destroying as much as possible. This enemy is real. As we live our … Continue reading

Remembering 9/11

This year marks the fifth anniversary of 9/11. I have noticed an increase in media references and even conversation about the event. This is a good time to talk to your children about fears that they might have concerning terrorism and also reaffirm the most important things in life. Terrorism is a real thing. You only have to turn on the news to be reminded of that. Your children might have questions and it is hard to know how to best respond. To be honest it depends on the child. There is no need to discuss the tragedy and current … Continue reading

Fitness Thoughts & More for September

It’s hard to start a month on a Friday. It’s even harder to start that month on the Friday of a three-day weekend. The first of the month is a beginning where we can get charged and excited. Friday is the end of the week and a time to tone it down and take it easy as you roll into the weekend proper. So how do we establish our thoughts on the month ahead? Well, let’s start simply. Monday is Labor Day, banks and such will be closed as will most business offices, retail will be open though and for … Continue reading
