Focus on the Oscars: More Memorable Oscar Moments

Tomorrow night is the big night and I can feel the excitement building…at least within myself. The Academy Awards is like my Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Championship, and World Cup all rolled into one. Coverage at my house starts at noon and never ends less than 12 hours later. (This image, by Alan Light, is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 License.) Because I am excited, my next few blogs will be about the Academy Awards. There have been events at the Oscars that will be remembered forever. Here are a few: Trey Parker and Matt Stones’ “Dress” If … Continue reading

Posthumous Oscars

This year, the forerunner for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor seems to be Heath Ledger, nominated for his searing performance as The Joke in The Dark Knight. Ledger received the nomination on January 22 – the one year anniversary of his death. (This image, by Howie Berlin, is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 2.0 License) In case you were wondering, other actors have been nominated for Oscars posthumously. In the past 81 years, 53 people have received 70 posthumous nominations with 13 of them winning. The first person nominated for an Oscar after his death was writer … Continue reading

Iron Man Does Well at the Box Office

Let me start this blog by saying that I am not a big fan of superheroes. Yes, I went and saw several of the Superman, Batman, and Spiderman movies, but it was never without a date. My husband made me sit through Van Helsing and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and they were okay. I will watch a superhero movie once without much fuss, but don’t expect me to ever see it again. It has just never been my thing and at the age I am now, I don’t expect that to ever change. However, I am now convinced the … Continue reading

2008 Oscar Fashion

Did you honestly think I would overlook this year’s fashion at the Academy Awards? I definitely had some opinions about the outfits, although I must say the guys for the most part were well dressed but dull. Even Johnny Depp looked normal! For the women, I must say that I didn’t really like Marion Cotillard’s dress. Yes, it was kind of pretty, but didn’t you think it made her look a bit like a mermaid with all the scales? Okay, okay, I know, she is French; she innately knows more about fashion than I do. Moving on, I thought Jennifer … Continue reading

More Oscar Buzz

My husband gets it, but some of my friends just don’t understand that my Oscar obsession lasts days after the actual ceremony. It’s like I am back in junior high science class with a frog – I have to dissect every moment of the show to get my fix. So, with that being said, here’s some more of the buzz about the 80th annual Academy Awards: I wondered who that was sitting next to Viggo Mortensen (who looked a thousand years old with that beard). I thought maybe his daughter, but it was actually his niece Sydney. Aww, how sweet! … Continue reading

80th Annual Academy Awards – The Winners!

I have to admit that with a three year old, I rarely get to see movies in the theatre anymore. This can be painful for me as most Academy Award nominated films are not out on DVD before the time the ceremony airs. But, it seems that each year, I get to see one nominated movie and put all my money on that one. So far, my husband and I are three for three. We did get to see Crash two years ago and last year, we were fortunate enough to see The Departed. This year, I had to put … Continue reading

The Oscar Aftermath

Well, I only got to watch about 9 hours of Oscar coverage yesterday as my hubby and I decided to take our son to a train show. Then, I missed some of E!’s coverage because I couldn’t hear it over the steamy train engine running in my kitchen. But, I still loved it. Oscar Day is THE yearly holiday for me at my house and this year, it didn’t disappoint (even though I, unlike most people, thought it ran a bit short!). So what were the highlights and lowlights of the night? Well, on the red carpet, certain sites are … Continue reading

The Independent Spirit Awards

Tomorrow is Oscar day and I cannot wait! But tonight, I will be watching the Independent Spirit Awards on the Independent Film Channel (IFC). The Independent Spirit Awards may include some of those honored with Academy Award nominations, but more often than not, those nominated are people from movies of which you may not have even heard. Thus is the spirit of independent films. It seems only fitting that this award show occurs the day before the Oscars, which many in the industry see as a show that often ignores independent films because they often don’t make a lot of … Continue reading

TV Tidbits: Ready Your Remotes

It’s official… Denise Richards is making like Tori Spelling—-she’s getting her own reality TV show. I mentioned the brouhaha surrounding the actress’ new series in a previous blog and wondered if the show would be picked up as a summer replacement. Sure enough the bigwigs at E! decided to give the show (which is being produced by Ryan Seacrest’s company) the green light. So let the eye rolling begin. Heck, if Hulk Hogan, Paula Abdul and the former Donna Martin can make it as reality TV stars, why shouldn’t Richards give it a go? According to the network, cameras will … Continue reading

Grammy and Academy Award News

Two of my favorite award shows are coming up soon – the Grammys and the Academy Awards. There is a bit of new on the Grammy front. Troubled songstress Amy Winehouse, who many critics have picked to win several Grammys this year, will not attend the ceremony. Well, it isn’t so much that she won’t attend the Grammys – she can’t! Her request for a visa to the U.S. was denied. She is nominated for six Grammys, but apparently, that pulled no weight at all with the American Embassy in London who chose to refuse her visa request. Maybe they … Continue reading
