Designer Beauty Supplies For Travelers

How has the government’s crackdown on liquids and gels affected your packing? If you are one of those glamour girls who loves to pamper your hair and skin with high-end beauty products you’ve likely either had to start packing your goods in your checked baggage (and hope that they end up at your destination) or you have been forced to leave them at home and buy new ones when you land. Or, if you are like me you head to the nearest drug store and hunt for generic brands of mini shampoos and lotions to bring on board your flight. … Continue reading

Free Adventure Tool and Online Courses

David’s been wanting to join Civil Air Patrol. If you don’t know about it, it’s sort of a years-long boot camp for kids wanting to join the Air Force, learn to fly, or just learn life experience skills. We have so much going on already that I don’t think we can fit it in the schedule without sacrificing something else. Right now, I’m not willing to do that. While searching around for deals, I think I found a solution! The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association is offering a free adventure tool. It has a compass, whistle, flashlight, magnifying glass, and … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane, It’s… A Swarm of Bees?

I don’t think there is a traveler out there whose heart wouldn’t race upon hearing the warning: “Prepare for an emergency landing.” So I can just imagine what passengers on board a flight from the United Kingdom to Portugal felt this weekend when they heard a “tremendous bang” after takeoff, and then the dreaded emergency landing warning. According to news reports, the “bang” passengers heard wasn’t a hydraulics problem or a piece of the plane snapping off; rather it was the sound of a swarm of bees being sucked into an engine. The good news is that no one was … Continue reading

Preparing For Travel Delays–Part 2

In my previous blog: “Preparing For Travel Delays,” I provided tips on how to avoid having to spend the night at the airport because of unexpected delays. To review the first three tips click here. Otherwise, here are a few more ideas that may save you from pulling out your hair when you hear an airline representative repeat (for the 10th time) that your flight is “experiencing a slight delay.” Tip #4–Know Your Options and Act Fast This is a tip I got from watching CBS’ “The Amazing Race” contestants. When the players get to the airport they always make … Continue reading

How To Survive A Plane Crash

In a previous blog I asked the question “Do airplanes have ‘safe seats?’” After all, if you were on-board a plane that was experiencing a major problem wouldn’t you want to be in a seat that offered the best chance of survival? As it turns out, aviation safety experts say that each crash has so many different variables that it would be “very difficult — if not impossible –to determine if any one seat offers a better chance of surviving a crash than another.” But take heart, studies show between 1983 and 2000, more than 95% of people involved in … Continue reading

Boarding Tips for Families with Kids

Typically, airlines will allow parents with children and people with disabilities to board the plane prior to other passenger to help with flow. This way, you have adequate time to get the baby’s items in the overhead while getting the child and you settled into the seats. Now, when you leave the plane, I recommend you be patient and allow the other passengers to exit first. Although you might be excited to reach your destination, it will save you frustration, as well as the other passengers. When booking a flight, the location of where you want to sit in the … Continue reading

Candy Airplane Craft

This project can be made just for a fun treat or it can be used for party favors. Another great idea is sending these to school for classmates on your child’s birthday. You don’t always have to send cupcakes (although you might want to check with teacher, and if these favors need to be saved for home, you might want to send something along with them). It’s great to give and receive something fun, creative and different. These airplanes are super easy and a lot of fun to make. They only require a few candies and sticks of gum, some … Continue reading

Traveling With Children—Learn From My Mistakes

I used to be one of those travelers who would see a mother and her screaming child in the boarding area of an airport and secretly hope they wouldn’t be seated near me on a crowded flight. Well, that’s not entirely true. What I was really hoping for was that they wouldn’t be on my flight at all. Fast-forward a few years–now I’m the one with the baby. I might be older and wiser than I was when I was single, but giving birth didn’t gift me with the power to read minds. Then again, I don’t have to be … Continue reading

Drama At 30,000 Feet

Here’s something no passenger wants to see at 30,000 feet: a pilot locked out of the cockpit midway through a flight. If you think it can’t happen, think again. According to news reports, the pilot of a Canadian airliner who went to the restroom during a recent flight found himself locked out of the cockpit. Not only that, but apparently, crew members were forced to remove the door from its hinges to let him back in. An unsettling sight to say the least. According to local newspapers, the strange (but true) incident happened on-board a regional jet operated by Air … Continue reading

Travel Tips For Flyers

Make no mistake—I love to travel. It’s the planning and packing that I despise. Currently, I am trying to find a reasonable price on two plane tickets to one destination and trying to book an affordable rental car and a hotel room in a different city. Confusing? Yes, I know. But, deals exist; it’s just a matter of tracking them down. By following some simple rules you can drastically improve your chances of finding a ticket in your price range. Here are some that have helped me in the past: Be Flexible. If you absolutely don’t need to be at … Continue reading
