Another Reason To Visit Atlanta

Regular readers of this blog know I have been very outspoken about my love for “The City Too Busy To Hate.” I got my first taste of Atlanta, Georgia in 1996 when I moved there to cover the Summer Olympic Games, and as the saying goes, the rest is history. From the people (expect for some drivers who got upset with me for driving too slow on the Perimeter—I was going 82 m.p.h.) to the parks, the museums to the food, the zoos, and all of the other family friendly attractions, Hotlanta is hard to beat. If you have never … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: No Men Allowed, Celebrating Coke, and Unhappy Hybrid Drivers

NO MEN ALLOWED You’ve heard of single sex dorms… well how about single sex hotels? Okay, how about single sex floors in hotels? That’s what you’ll get when you visit a new Marriott hotel being built in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The entire 19th floor of the hotel will be off limits to men. In addition, a lounge at the hotel will also be restricted to females only when the hotel opens for business in September. Why the segregation? A Marriott spokesperson says that more than half of all business travelers that stay at their properties are women and many expressed … Continue reading

The Concert That Keeps Giving

If you find yourself near the Atlanta area this week—consider yourself lucky. That’s where you will find what is being billed as the “World’s Largest Open Mic Night.” Only instead of one night, the concert will last 10 straight nights. Ten nights of music featuring 500 bands and solo artists performing hits from a variety of genres–rock, R&B, rap, and bluegrass–but, with a couple of twists. First, the tunes will be performed, in order, each of the 500 greatest songs of all time, as ranked by Rolling Stone magazine three years ago. The other twist: the songfest’s goal is to … Continue reading

Atlanta—Where To Go Outside Of The City

When I was young, single and living in Atlanta (years ago) I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my days off from work than strolling through the area’s premier shopping centers—Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza. Eventually, after I burned one too many holes in my wallet from doing so I decided I needed to venture beyond the malls and explore the other incredible attractions the city had to offer. I’ve featured several of them in previous blogs, but most of those included hot spots in the city proper. If you travel to Atlanta you’ll likely find that some … Continue reading

Visiting Zoo Atlanta

I have written many blogs highlighting the wonderful attractions Atlanta, Georgia has to offer visitors and residents alike. Get ready, I have one more to add to the list. I just can’t help myself—there’s so much about the city that warrants gushing over (save for the horrendous traffic and the drivers—Atlanta drivers… let’s just leave that topic for another blog, this blog is about the city’s positive attributes). Not that you needed another, but now there’s one more reason to stop by Zoo Atlanta. A new resident has arrived at the zoo (and made history in the process)—she is the … Continue reading

Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park–Come Celebrate!

Wow! It’s hard to believe that it has been 10 years since Atlanta hosted the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. It was exactly ten years ago today that I was offered (and accepted) a job as a news reporter covering the Olympic Games. It’s still hard for me to believe that an entire decade has passed since I loaded my belongings into my little Toyota Corolla and headed down south. When I got Atlanta my first assignment was to cover the progress being made on Centennial Olympic Park. Since it was May, the finishing touches were still being put on what … Continue reading
