The Great BPA Debate

B… P… A… they are the three letters every mom knows and fears. Manufacturers of baby products were slow to catch on to the harmful effects of Bisphenol A, but there is now an entire industry devoted to BPA free bottles and pacifiers–anything a kid is likely to stick in his month. The “BPA free” moniker is so prevalent in the baby aisle these days, it’s a wonder any business is crazy enough to still be making products containing BPA. The new toxic buzzword du jour, though, is Phthalates. According to Wikipedia, it is a substance “added to plastics to … Continue reading

We already know that BPA is dangerous. It has been linked to fertility problems, cancer, and sexual dysfunction in men, among other defects. There has been a big push to remove BPA from the plastics that we come in contact with every day. If you walk through the baby aisle, you’ll notice that most of the bottles are in packaging boldly marked, “BPA Free.” Many people have switched to using aluminum water bottles as a precaution as well. BPA: Harder to Avoid Than Originally Thought?

You have probably heard about BPA (bisphenol A) and how some believe it is bad for our health. BPA is an industrial chemical used to make plastics. In 2002 alone, there was 2.8 million tons of BPA produced, so there is a lot of it out there. You have probably heard experts warn not to reuse your water bottles, choose BPA-free plastic baby bottles, don’t microwave polycarbonate plastic food containers (use glass instead), and just plain avoid any plastic that has the No. 7 recycling label because it is made with BPA. Right now, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) … Continue reading

Suffolk County legislature approved the ban unanimously, now it is up to Steve Levy, the County Executive to sign it into law. This would make Suffolk County the very first in the nation to actually ban BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups. Other state … Continue reading

Which Toys Don’t Include Phthalates?

Phthalates are chemicals that are considered toxic waste by the US Environmental Protection Agency, and yet they included in most plastic toys and other items that come in contact with out babies, such as sippy cups. A study was done and researchers found that an unsafe amount of BPA leaked into the contents of the bottle after several uses. Now I have some good news! Whole Foods now sells Born Free baby bottles, a brand that is deemed “safer” because it is biphenyl A Free. You may thought … Continue reading
