Duke and the Great Pie War (2005)

This installment in the VeggieTales collection of spoofed Bible stories was a little bit odd to me. I didn’t find it as well constructed as the films of the past. I knew they were trying to make a point, but I didn’t feel they actually made it. Let’s take a closer look at it. The theme for the show was loving your family. We see Laura Carrot as Miriam, older sister to baby Moses. She resents having to take care of the baby while her parents are working in the brickyard as Pharoah’s slaves. She used to get all the … Continue reading

VeggieTales — Gideon: Tuba Warrior (2006)

I’m a big fan of VeggieTales and we have most of the movies. “Gideon: Tuba Warrior” is new to us today, and I have to say, out of all the episodes, this is the one that has spoken to me the most personally. The lesson is on trusting God, and in its simple poignancy, the film truly reminded me of God’s love for all His children. First we see the story of George Mueller, a man who lived in England and ran an orphanage with his wife. They had no money of their own, but trusted God to give them … Continue reading

King George and the Ducky (2000)

When I first heard that the folks at VeggieTales were going to do the story of Bathsheba, I thought their brains must be the size of peas. How would you tell that story in a way that is appropriate for children? Well, I should have had a little more faith. They not only did it, but they did it very well. Taking their cue from the fact that there was a bath involved in the original Bible story, they created a storyline where the object of desire was a rubber duck. Larry the Cucumber plays King George, a man who … Continue reading

Josh and the Big Wall (2002)

“Josh and the Big Wall” is the movie that started it all for the Pinkston family. That’s right; it’s the movie my mom brought home from Virginia, babbling about produce all the way. Once I saw it, I started babbling about produce too. You might say, we now speak celery. This VeggieTales video tells us the story of Joshua (Larry the Cucumber) the man who was chosen to be prophet upon the death of Moses. Moses had led the children of Israel out of Egypt and through the wilderness, but he died before they actually entered the Promised Land. It … Continue reading

Gathered: A Novel of Ruth — LeeAnn Setzer

Most of us are familiar with the story of Ruth as found in the Bible in the book of the same name. Ruth was a young woman who found herself a widow after only ten years of marriage. Upon the death of her husband, she was free to return to her home, but her love for her mother-in-law Naomi was so great that she chose to travel to a strange land and be by Naomi’s side as a companion and protector. She eventually married Boaz, the owner of a nearby field who allowed her to gather up the leftovers after … Continue reading

The Alice in Bibleland Series – Alice Joyce Davidson

Author Alice Joyce Davidson tells us of Alice, a little girl who owns her own copy of the Bible. She loves to sit down and read stories from its pages, and as she does so, she is able to walk into the book and watch firsthand the things that are taking place. Each of her adventures is told in rhyme, and each of them concludes at the end with a summary of what Alice learned from that Bible story. The language of the Bible can be confusing for children. When a book is hard to understand, the child doesn’t want … Continue reading

Bible Stories: The New Testament

I recently completed the Bible Stories to Share with Your Children Series over the book of Genesis. I thought it would be a good idea to switch gears a little bit, and to go through a New Testament book, specifically the book of Matthew, next. Starting with the book of Matthew will help your children have a good understanding of the life of Jesus. A good way to begin the study of the book of Matthew is to actually talk about Matthew and his role in the life of Christ. Teach your children that Matthew was a tax collector, and … Continue reading

Five Ways for Kids to Learn about the Bible

Bedtime stories. Use the Bible as your child’s bedtime story. Reading the stories of the Bible to your children not only benefits your children, but you, for you are also immersed in the Word of God. It is also possible that by reading the Bible to your children each night that you will help them develop a lifelong habit of daily Bible reading and study. Crafts that help children remember. I included the phrase “that help children remember” to the type of crafts because I have noticed that there is a distinction between crafts that are just fun and crafts … Continue reading

Bible Stories to Share With Your Children: The Creation

As I mentioned in a previous blog, I am going to start writing a weekly series on Bible stories to share with your children. I believe that the Biblical account of creation is a great place to start for a couple of different reasons, most obviously because it shows children the beginning of our existence, but also because it shows that we are unique creation from God. The Biblical account of creation is found in the first two chapters of Genesis. My goal in this blog is not to retell the creation story but to rather give ideas on how … Continue reading
