Folk Singer Odetta Holmes Dies at 77

Folk singer and civil rights activist Odetta Holmes, known professionally as Odetta, died this week of heart disease at the age of 77. Odetta influenced a generation of singers such as Janis Joplin, Tracy Chapman, Janis Ian, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez with her folk, blues, and gospel classics. Okay, if you cannot tell what I am talking about from the title, “Death Magnetic” is the name of the upcoming Metallica album, slated to be released Friday. But, as many albums have been (see below), the entire album was leaked on the Internet by pirates. How did it happen? Robert Allen Zimmerman was born on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota, and was raised in Hibbing, Minnesota, northwest of Lake Superior.
