Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 10:1-10

Lehi has related his dream of the tree of life to his family, and Nephi has taken a moment to explain that these plates are those upon which he is enscribing the more spiritual things and that the other plates he is keeping will be for the more political things of his people. 1. And now I, Nephi, proceed to give an account upon these plates of my proceedings, and my reign and ministry; wherefore, to proceed with mine account, I must speak somewhat of the things of my father, and also of my brethren. 2. For behold, it came … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 9 – and Thoughts about Nephi

Lehi has finished recounting his vision of the tree of life to his family, and he begged Laman and Lemuel to turn to the Lord and repent of their wrongdoings. To summarize the next few verses, Lehi spoke more things that were too numerous to be written upon the plates. Nephi clarifies that these plates are not the ones upon which he is making a full account of the people, but rather, a second set which he was commanded of the Lord to make so there would be a record of the ministry of Nephi’s people. The other plates deal … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 8:35-38

Lehi is recounting his dream to his family. He tells them of a large and spacious building filled with people who laugh at those who have chosen to partake of the fruit of the tree, and how many have fallen away and become lost after listening to the mocking. 35. And Laman and Lemuel partook not of the fruit, said my father. This is interesting to me. He didn’t see Laman and Lemuel partake and then fall away—he saw that they didn’t partake at all. This must have caused him great distress as a parent, but he can’t have been … Continue reading

Scripture Study 1 Nephi 8:26-34

Lehi is recounting his vision to his family. He saw a tree filled with marvelous fruit, and leading up to that tree was a rod of iron that led along a straight and narrow path. There were people who wandered up to the tree, but felt ashamed after partaking of the fruit. 26. And I also cast my eyes round about, and beheld, on the other side of the river of water, a great and spacious building; and it stood as it were in the air, high above the earth. This building is on the other side of the water, … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 8:19-25

Lehi has had a vision within a dream. He saw a tree filled with beautiful fruit, and upon eating it, was filled with such joy and delight, he wanted to share it with his family. The righteous members of the family joined him and ate, while the wicked ignored him. 19. And I beheld a rod of iron, and it extended along the bank of the river, and led to the tree by which I stood. I love this chapter and its marvelous allegory. The rod isn’t made of wood or other substance that might rot away, but it’s made … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 8:12-18

Lehi has gathered his family around to recount a marvelous vision he had in a dream. He was led through a wilderness by an angelic being until he reached a tree filled with wonderful fruit. 12. And as I partook of the fruit thereof it filled my soul with exceedingly great joy; wherefore, I began to be desirous that my family should partake of it also; for I knew that it was desirable above all other fruit. What immediately strikes me about this verse is the desire Lehi has to share this joy with his family. It’s not enough for … Continue reading

Scripture Study 1 Nephi 7:22, 8:1-11

At the end of chapter seven, Lehi offers sacrifices to the Lord to thank Him for the safe return of his sons and of Ishmael’s family. At the beginning of chapter eight, the family prepares for the future by gathering grains and seeds of every kind, until one day when Lehi gathers his family and says: 2. And it came to pass that while my father tarried in the wilderness he spake unto us, saying: Behold, I have dreamed a dream; or, in other words, I have seen a vision. My first thought when I read this verse was to … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 7:16-21

Nephi is leading Ishmael’s family back to Lehi’s wilderness camp so that the sons of Lehi can intermarry with the daughters of Ishmael and bring up seed to the Lord. On the journey, Laman and Lemuel, along with some of the sons and daughters of Ishmael, have decided to stir up trouble and want to return to Jerusalem. Nephi is trying to show them the foolishness of their plan, as Jerusalem is about to be destroyed. 16. And it came to pass that when I, Nephi, had spoken these words unto my brethren, they were angry with me. And it … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 7:6-15

Nephi and his brothers have returned to Jerusalem at their father’s request and the Lord’s command to ask Ishmael and his family to join them in the wilderness. Ishmael had several daughters and they would make good wives for the sons of Lehi. Ishmael has agreed and now the group is on their way back to the tents of Lehi. 6. And it came to pass that as we journeyed in the wilderness, behold Laman and Lemuel, and two of the daughters of Ishmael, and the two sons of Ishmael and their families, did rebel against us; yea, against me, … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 7:1-5

Lehi has obtained the plates of brass and, moved upon by the spirit, prophesied that the writing thereon would go to his descendants. Nephi and his brothers have settled back in to their tents and think that from now on, they’ll be traveling further into the wilderness. 1. And now I would that ye might know, that after my father, Lehi, had made an end of prophesying concerning his seed, it came to pass that the Lord spake unto him again, saying that it was not meet for him, Lehi, that he should take his family into the wilderness alone; … Continue reading
