Chaz Bono Applies for Name/Gender Change

Chaz Bono, the child of ‘70s greats Sonny and Cher, has filed to legally his gender to male and his name to Chaz Bono according to TMZ. For those that haven’t been following this story, Chaz was born Chastity Bono in 1969. The only child of Sonny and Cher, Chastity grew up in the spotlight, often appearing on her parent’s television show. When Chastity turned 18, she came out to both her parents as a lesbian. She wrote in her 1998 “Family Outing” memoir, “as a child, I always felt there was something different about me.” Chastity also wrote that … Continue reading

The Supreme Court Upholds Crackdown on Television Profanity

The other night, I was having dinner with some friends. One expressed shock that she saw Luke, a deaf contestant on “The Amazing Race,” sign the term for a female dog (follow me here). I told her I wasn’t really surprised because one of the other contestants had verbally called him that derogatory name beforehand. That prompted another dinner guest to say “Oh yeah, they can say…” and went through all the curse words that could be said on television today without being bleeped out. After that conversation, I remembered that when I was growing up, things certainly seemed a … Continue reading

Do You Love Your Spouse? Too Bad!

One of my favorite lines in a movie comes near the end of the movie Moonstruck. After several interesting adventures, the main character, played by share, is given a proposal of marriage as the family is seated around the breakfast table. Her mother turns to her after the proposal: Rose: “Do you love him, Loretta?”
Loretta: “Ma, I love him awful.”
Rose: “Oh, God, that’s too bad.” While this is a funny moment (the fiancee is clearly a good guy, although complete with his own quirks), it is obvious that the mom is actually happy for her daughter, even though she, … Continue reading

Cher: The Original Diva – Part 2

When I last left off in my Cher blog, it was the end of the 70s. She was twice divorced and her record career had stalled. So, what do you do when you aren’t selling records? You reinvent yourself as an actress. At the age of 36 (often considered “old” in Hollywood), Cher starred in the Broadway production of Com Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. She received critical praise and later starred in the film version. She appeared in Silkwood as unglamorous lesbian – showing us a completely different side of Cher. For the role, … Continue reading

Cher: The Original Diva – Part 1

The Lindsay Lohans, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez’s, and yes, even Madonna’s of the world have one woman to thank for their being able to combine singing and acting careers – Cher. Yes, long before most of them were even born, Cher was doing it her own way, no matter what anyone said. Oh sure, Liz Taylor had grace and charm on the screen, but you never heard about Liz in the recording studio, did you? Most of today’s kids probably think it was Madonna that broke that door down, but I would have to disagree – I think Madonna took … Continue reading

They’re Baaack: Cher and Tina Turner

Ah, Cher and Tina Turner…does it get any more classic that that? These two ladies could sing and entertain circles around most performers today. And, what careers they have had! If the Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohans of the world want to know how to thrive and survive in the show business world, they could definitely take a few cues from these ladies. Both singers are now in their sixties (Cher is 61 and Tina is an amazing 68). Both have been taking it easy later – after all, after momentous careers, they both deserve it. But, this week, both … Continue reading

A Brief History of Celebrity Cougars

Last night, I watched the season finale of Age of Love. If you missed the show, it featured 31-year-old tennis star Mark Philippoussis as a single man looking for love. The catch of the show was that they brought in 13 eligible bachelorettes for him to choose from – six in their twenties (dubbed the kittens) and seven in their forties (dubbed the cougars). The show was supposed to show that age meant nothing. Well, in the end, apparently age did mean something. Mark picked 25-year-old Amanda Salinas over 48 year old Jen Braff. Regardless of the results of that … Continue reading

Cher’s Used Goods Bring In A Pretty Penny

I have written about celebrity auctions in previous blogs, so when I heard Cher was purging her home in preparation for a major two-day auction I wondered how successful it would be. Well, the results are in and personally I am floored by how much was raised. All tolled the star’s goods raked in a total of $3.5 million. My jaw dropped when I heard that the total surpassed the million-dollar mark. Typically, an auction that raises that more than $2 million is one that involves items from a multitude of celebrities or treasured good from famous individuals (Princess Diana, … Continue reading

How To Sleep In Cher’s Bed

Have you ever dreamed of cuddling up in Cher’s bed? Come October you may get the chance (minus the singer-actress). The superstar’s bed is just one of 700 items up for grabs at an auction benefiting the Cher Charitable Foundation. Not interested in the bed? The sale also includes other furniture, artwork, jewelry, a 2003 H2 Hummer and original costumes by Bob Mackie—all items that have been stored at Cher’s Malibu home for quite some time. “I’m truly excited about it, having had this stuff for so many years,” Cher told reporters in a recent interview. “I’m only keeping about … Continue reading
