Sniff, Sniff…the Best Tearjerker Movie List – Part 2

Continue with me on my tearjerker journey through some of the movies that made me cry over the years. 6. Brian’s Song Wow, I must have been all of eight years old when I saw this one. It was a made-for-television movie, but it tore through my young heart nonetheless. It is the true story of Chicago Bears teammates Brian Piccolo (played by James Caan), who was white and Gale Sayers (played by the oh-so-handsome Billy Dee Williams), who was black. The two opposites attract and become best friends – that is until Brian Piccolo is struck down with cancer … Continue reading

Odds and Ends: Birthdays and Tailgate Parties

Do you have any parties planned between now and the onset of the holidays? Maybe you do a Halloween or Harvest party. We’ll get into those soon, but for now, here are a couple of tips for some other types of fall parties. Birthday Party Idea Instead of a typical, disposable party tablecloth, cover a table with poster board. Have all the kids sign it, adding various notes and doodles. Your child will have a great memento of the party. Another option is to supply a smaller piece of poster board or card stock, one that will fit inside a … Continue reading

Quick Trick for Extra Seating

Well, I won’t bore those of you who aren’t into football with the kick off of a new NFL season, especially since my team the Chicago Bears, lost their first game. However, as autumn emerges, there are going to be other get-togethers besides football games, and you may need some extra seating for last minute entertaining. A great way to add some extra seating without a lot of effort or expense is to utilize your existing patio chairs. No, I’m not suggesting that we just throw them into our living rooms or family rooms “as is,” but there are some … Continue reading

“The Super Bowl Shuffle”

Dig out your spandex—the “Super Bowl Shuffle” is back! I may be dating myself, but the truth must be told: when I was in high school my friends and I did busta move to the 80s hit. Members of the Chicago Bears football team recorded the song in 1985. It sold more than 500,000 singles and reached No. 41 on the music charts. Now, the cheeky little ditty has fans shuffling again as this year’s team prepares for tomorrow’s Super Bowl. According to Chicago radio stations, the “Shuffle” is the most requested tune on the air. It can also be … Continue reading

Not a Football Fan? Have an Un Super Bowl Party!

Okay, so not everybody gets into football. No problem. There is no reason you can’t still have just as much fun on Super Bowl Sunday while others do their thing. Just throw a simultaneous Un Super Bowl Party! Let the football fans have one room and one TV to enjoy the kicking, passing, rushing, tackling, sacking, and interceptions, while you enjoy your own good time in another room. Maybe some of your friends would like to drop off their kids or husbands (or wives, who knows?) in your family room to watch the big game, and join you for an … Continue reading

Entertaining: Last Minute Super Bowl Party Ideas

Now that we know which teams will be facing each other in the Super Bowl, it’s a little easier to decorate. Since both teams have blue in their uniforms and logos, you might want to go with blue to keep it simple. However, the Colts blue is more of a royal blue, while the Bears blue is a navy. Royal blue and white on one side of the room and navy with orange on the other is a good scheme, if you want to decorate in a neutral fashion. If you’re not sure which of your guests are cheering for … Continue reading

NFL Championships: History in the Making!

I am so excited! The Chicago Bears are heading to the Super Bowl after soundly defeating the New Orleans Saints 39-14 yesterday. It was a great game, and the Bears took the Saints to task despite having important players like Tommie Harris and Mike Brown out due to injuries. Teams Making History The Bears made history by once again taking the NFC Championship and heading off to another Super Bowl. Fans have waited 21 years for this event, and it appeared that it would be a repeat of their last visit to the Big Show, as the New England Patriots … Continue reading

Satellite TV

Does satellite television live up to the hype? For some, the answer is an emphatic yes. My family was thrilled when we first obtained a satellite and over 100 channels to choose from, especially since we had only been able to receive one station with fuzzy reception up until that time. The Ozarks are beautiful, but these hills don’t make for great TV, radio, or cell phone signals. We were very pleased with our programming and service from DISH. We added a package that included the networks, ABC, NBC, CBS, etc. It cost a few dollars more, but we felt … Continue reading

A Day Late and a Dollar Short

Do you ever get thrown off when you have a Monday off work or your kids have it off school? I’ve gone through weeks like that where I couldn’t keep the days or the dates straight all week. It started early this time. I’m usually okay until after the Monday passes, and then I keep thinking Tuesday is Monday, Wednesday is Tuesday, and so on. This time, it started on Saturday. Saturday felt like Sunday. All day, I was looking forward to the Bear’s game coming on. It was a night game this week, and by the time dinner was … Continue reading
