How to Make Christmas Entertaining Fun for Kids

Rather than letting them sit in front of the TV while you run around like a decapitated chicken preparing for your annual holiday party, get your kids involved in the process. Children are great helpers, especially if you give them specific tasks to accomplish. To keep them engaged, have them work on age appropriate jobs. For example, if you have a preschooler, task him with creating colorful homemade placemats made from construction paper, markers and glitter glue. (You can laminate their masterpieces when they are done.) Likewise, you can get your teens involved in party prep by having them make … Continue reading

Fun with Fruitcake–The Best Gag Gift of the Season

It’s the holiday tradition that takes a lickin’, but keeps on tickin’. Actually, I know several people who wouldn’t put their tongues anyway near fruitcake, yet that doesn’t seem to diminish its role as a Christmas stalwart. Regardless of the fact that it remains the butt of countless jokes and no matter how many people toss it out as soon they get it, the Christmas fruitcake keeps coming back year after year (and in some cases it’s the same one making the rounds). Many fruitcake recipients are under the impression that the holiday dessert has no expiration. That it can … Continue reading

Free Christmas Fun in Indianapolis

Who says you need to spend a bundle to have some holiday family fun? The economy is tanking and managers of Indianapolis-area attractions are responding by offering fabulous freebies during the 12 days leading up to Christmas. For example, on Saturday, December 13th, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum will be offering free admission to its collection of trophies and cars. On Sunday, December 14th, you can tour the President Benjamin Harrison … Continue reading

Fun Stocking Stuffers

For years now my extended family has been doing inexpensive gifts for one another. We call these “stocking presents” and for a lot of years the presents did get stuffed in a stocking at my mother’s house. Now we are more scattered, so the presents get mailed. Stocking presents are a nice way to still buy for a large family. It’s fun to see what people come up and it is fun to still be wrapping up tiny presents for my siblings, and for their spouses and children. The challenge though is to find nice gifts for under five dollars. … Continue reading

Planning for Holiday Fun

The day after Thanksgiving is a great day to do a little planning for December. I don’t like to fight the crowds, today. I like to stay home with a piece a pie, a fire, a pen and a calendar. Our paper has a listing of upcoming local events. I penciled in parades, the special lights at the zoo nights, and the dates of a local production of the Christmas Carol. I wrote in dates of Christmas parties that I knew about. The kids and I figured out a good day to put up the tree and to decorate the … Continue reading

Room Mom Fun

I’m a room mom for a lot of reasons. It gives me a chance to be in my children’s classrooms, to get to know their teachers and classmates. It’s a way of sharing my children’s school day that’s fun. I also enjoy the chance to meet and work with the other parents. Planning a party for a class is always a challenge for me. I want the kids to have a great time but without getting over excited and loud. I want to give them a chance to do something creative without making a huge mess in the classroom. I … Continue reading
