Book Clubs

Book clubs have become “the thing” to do over the last few years, and I think they’re a great idea. Whether you meet together as neighbors, church members, or friends, you’ll find the experience to be rewarding. Education – as you read together in your group, you’ll be exposed to books you might not have thought to pick up on your own. When Children Reach the “Club” Stage

Think back to your own childhood…do you remember the constant starting and creating of “clubs”—secret clubs with passwords and charters and all sorts of membership requirements? Some of our childhood clubs are rather elaborate and others have a more “impromptu” feel. I remember the very old children’s program “The Little Rascals” where the young boys had very established meetings of the “He-Man Woman-Haters Club.” While this is considered pretty politically incorrect these days, it is still a great example of the age and developmentally-appropriate stage of “clubs.” Somewhere around first or second grade, it seems, clubs become a big deal. … Continue reading

The Death of a Rock-n-Roll Icon

I have always heard all good things must come to an end. But this one really hurts. I read today that famed New York club CBGB will officially be closing in October 2006. The club’s lease expired and unable or unwilling to pay the rent increase from $19,000 to $35,000 a month, owner Hilly Kristal was eventually presented with an eviction notice. The music industry rallied around finding a solution to keep CBGB open, but after much hubbub between Hilly and the property owner, it looks like the legendary club will close for good, at least at its original site. … Continue reading
