What To Do This Weekend

What are your plans for the weekend? Many movie fans are counting down the hours until Oscar Sunday. Will Oscar virgin Sandra Bullock win gold? Will Oscar history be made with a win by Kathryn Bigelow? If you can’t get enough of the Academy Awards, but can’t afford a trip to Los Angeles to sit on the sidelines across from the real red carpet, then consider a trip to New York. The Big Apple is hosting a marathon screening of New York-centric Oscar winners from “Annie Hall” to “The Godfather” through Sunday at the Walter Reade Theater. In addition, in … Continue reading

End of the Summer Travel Destinations

Your child’s first assignment of the new school year is to write an essay on what he or she did this summer. So what material does he or she have to draw on? Where have you ventured to this summer? Did you do Disney? Camp in Colorado? Or stroll along the Riverwalk in San Antonio? Or, were you a victim of high gas prices and skyrocketing airfares and stuck close to home this season? A family vacation doesn’t have to break the bank if you plan accordingly. To save money take the short drive to visit some of the more … Continue reading

Big Deals in the Big D

Traditionally I don’t keep tabs on hotel deals in Texas, but with the Green Bay Packers poised to take on the Dallas Cowboys in a divisional championship game (provided both teams win their respective play off games this weekend) I’ve had several friends ask me if there were ways to save money in Texas should the road to the Super Bowl run through Dallas. While I didn’t find a ton of deals in the Dallas metro-area I did come across a number of spectacular hotel rates at other properties scattered around the state. It might not help football fans, but … Continue reading

Why It’s a Good Time of the Year to Be Flying with Kids

No, I haven’t lost my mind. It’s true; the busy holiday season is typically when I suggest to parents with young children to avoid crowded airports at all costs, but that was before one airport started to give away free food with proof of a pint-sized traveling companion. Dallas/Fort Worth Airport is hoping that free food and entertainment for kids will help make the hectic holiday travel season a bit brighter. To that end, the airport is offering a two-day “Kids Eat Free” promotion. Here are the details: From noon to 2 p.m. on December 20-21, airport employees will distribute … Continue reading

Affordable Holiday Travel: Touring Department Store Window Displays—Dallas

Who needs ice and snow when you’ve got sparkle and shine? Dallas is not known for snow-covered sidewalks, but the city certainly doesn’t lack the Christmas spirit thanks in large part to upscale retail giant Neiman Marcus. As I continue my series of blogs spotlighting department store window displays I am turning my attention from the Big Apple to the Big D—Dallas. The city is home to Neiman Marcus’s flagship store and the windows at the downtown location are traditionally one of the most visited spots in the entire state during the holiday season. This year the store is treating … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits–Museum Moves

Good news for those of you who missed out on the headline grabbing King Tut museum tour. The mega-popular exhibit, which features objects buried with Egypt’s King Tutankhamun is returning to the United States next year. It will include three stops, beginning in Dallas. I was fortunate to be one of the 4 million visitors to take in the “Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs” exhibit during its two-year, four-city tour. I saw the exhibit in Chicago, but it also visited museums in Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, and Philadelphia before wrapping up a few weeks ago. The exhibit … Continue reading

Family-Friendly Attractions in Dallas

You’ve visited Southfork and spent hours looking at the exhibits displayed at the Six Floor Museum—-so what else does Dallas, Texas have to offer you and your family. Take a look: Reunion Tower You can’t miss it and you’ll probably keep wondering what it is until you go inside. The 50-story Reunion Tower looms over downtown Dallas with a giant ball-shaped dome that houses an observation deck and a restaurant. If you want a bird’s-eye view of the city (and a pretty good meal) then head to the very top of the tower. The observation area is open from 10 … Continue reading

Family Travel: Where To Go In Dallas

If all you know about Dallas, Texas is what you got from watching the money-hungry bad-tempered Ewings on TV then you are in for a real treat once you get there. Instead of seeing J.R. walking the streets downtown you’ll be pleasantly surprised to view some of the nation’s most famous tourist attractions. But, before I touch on those treasures, I suppose I should inform you that there is a place just outside of the city (about 20 miles north of Dallas) that pays homage to the TV villain and his oil rich family members. Southfork, the sprawling ranch house … Continue reading
